Putting in new system and need advice
As much as I always advocate the Brahma over the W7, it is by no means a sound quality sub. One of the best SQ subs Ive heard to date is the Infinity Perfect DVQ.
On top of that, Ive never heard a subwoofer that eats more than 550wrms that stays clean and tight....laws of physics prohibit this. This is why all SQ oriented subs are rated 500 or UNDER.
If you want to rattle the block, kiss the SQ goodbye.

umm... Coach, i agree on a ton of what you're saying, but as always
i disagree w/ your way overpower theory. i know your point, but while it works for you - it won't always work for everyone. in all honesty, 75 Wrms is a whole lot louder than many people seem to recognize.
saying that, i'd still recommend 100 Wrms / main and 500 Wrms for a sub IF you're speakers are rated appropriately.
and the Alpine swing face units -- there are some benefits to those HU's that DO make them very valuable. they have some very nice crossover and equalizer options, along with some other upgrades (V-drive included) that sometimes make them the preferred choice over the non-swing face units.
4 V pre outs are all you should need.
other than my nit-picking above -- Coach has made some very good recommendations.

PJK3 is exactly right. I am in the huge minority on recommending as much power as I do. Probably wrong about it too from most people's perspectives. I come from a family of overbuilders and overbuyers!
75rms is quite loud, I agree, depending on the sensitivity of the speaker units. 500watts on the sub is probably plenty, especially for a 10-12" sub. If you're pushing 15s or 18s then it may be different.
Regarding the Alpines with the swing face, I own one. A 9813 that I bought a year ago, and I like it very much so I am understanding what you mean.
NFR, I disagree completely about the SQ subs and I have never seen ANYONE compete professionally in SQ with an Infinity Perfect. I could point you to a number of wins with the Brahma, and the W7 though. A good sub is a good sub. And there is nothing special about making a very linear and smooth sub get loud. It just requires good design, money, and a good box.
I am wondering what laws of physics you believe preclude a sub from staying clean and tight just because it can absorb more than 550 wrms. The amount of power a sub can handle is largely dependent on what type of enclosure it's put in. The smaller the enclosure (sealed) the more the power required to make that sub move, and the more controlled it will be as balancing air forces on either side of the cone assist in damping. But I'd like to hear your theory.

I meant I thought you cometed in SQ stuff. Guess I just misread.

Interesting read. Ive never participated in a SQ competition, although some of the cars Ive done I think would def place.
They are judged by people I assume right? I gotta go check one of these out for myself. Thanks!
