question about subwoofer and amp
the jl audio 10w6v2's continuous power rating is 400 rms.
does that mean i have to buy a amp that is also 400 rms or should i buy one that is 500?
someone was tallng me about getting a 500/1 amp and since it puts out only 70% efficency it's a good amp to go with (talking about the jl audio 500/1 amp)

The efficiency is dependant on several things including power supply to the amp and guage of speaker wire. 400 watts RMS should be perfectly fine. I am going with 4ga power and ground/14ga to the 6.5 Momos/12ga to the sub.
JL has a cool chart on their website that shows both extremes and the sweet spot. Try this:

500 puts it in the danger zone.

so a jl 500/1 amp and a jl 10w6v2 would not be the best?
That sound like a nice match.

The way I have always done it, and this is just me of course, if I had a sub that I wanted to run 400 rms, I would get an amp thats 800 rms, and run it half a$$. Running an amp at full power WILL cause it to shut off in the summer (immense heat) and kill the lifespan of the amp.

That is a very interesting philosophy. Do you think going say 600wrms powering a 400 watt sub nets the same results?
I will be curious to see if that happens to my Soundstream next summer. Surely there are amps out there that can keep cool enough to not go into safe mode.
