I am no big expert, but I would say that you might be able to run like, one 8" sub with low watts. But for the most part you will need to get a little bit of an amp

short answer:

no.

Long answer:
you can run a sub system without buying an additional amp. Bazooka sub systems are an example of this:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-fndowZMCdXG/c...&search=bazooka

the sub comes with an amp plugged in already, so you don't have to buy a seperate one. Plug and Play...

but, they take up space awkardly and they sound slightly better than computer speakers.

(edit to fix link)

You cannot run a standalone sub (not basslink, or bazooka) without an amp. Low wattage wouldnt move the sub. Basslink and bazooka have amplifiers built in. So Seung, the answer is NO.

I have a sub right in front of my toes under the computer that does not have an amplifier. But, BUT it is 12 years old and was designed to run that way. The speaker wires run into it and the crossover is inside it, the wires then run to the satellite speakers. I have not seen a sub made like this in the last 10 years. Also it would not go into an auto in any realistic way unless it was used in an (UGH) suv or a station waggon.

Uh Phillip:
the sterio output from the amplifier goes into the sub and the crossover in the sub sends the low freq to the coils in the sub and the higher freq to the satelites. I didn't say it was a high end system just what was available in 1992. There was no subwoffer output on most receivers in those days. My present sub (the main system in the liveing room) has its own amplifier like all new subwoffers. I'm still running the full range to it and extracting the higher frequencys using its internal crossover but this is due to inter wiring limitations in the house.
Kirks law no. 300 or so, "no matter how many wires you run through the walls you will forget some of them". I wish toheck I had known about cat 5 wiring in 1992 but then the idea of wiring the house for a computer network would have been absurd. (yes we are now wireless).

Andy, what he meant was no sub/speaker/sound producing object can produce anything without an amp, which means power, which by laws of electrophysics, is 100% correct.
