I have a Beltronics Vector 975 Remote radar detector. This is a four-piece unit that includes:
1) the control panel,
2) a radar antenna,
3) a front window-mount laser sensor and
4) a rear window-mount laser sensor.
Since it wasn't possible to mount the rear window laser sensor on the rear window and put the top down, I have it mounted on the windscreen using industrial strength velcro. The suction cups it came with work fine for the front sensor, but it won't hold the rear sensor onto the windscreen. The velcro works fine in the cold months, however in the summer heat, the adhesive backing melts and no longer supports the rear sensor. Any suggestions on alternative mounting methods?
I am really set on keeping this setup primarily because there is no bulky contraption affixed to my windshield as with typical radar detectors.

kinda ironic, no?
here are my thoughts:
-keeping it on the windscreen isn't a bad idea.
-get a small roll or strip of some flat thin aluminum. generally, pretty easily found at Home Depot and the like.
-cut yourself out a section about 3"x5". use some sandpaper, metal files, and whatall to smooth out the cuts.
-then bend about 1" of one edge over a stack of credit cards (something about the thickness of the screen + a 1-2 millimeters on each side). bending it so that it makes a complete U-turn. this hook will hang the unit on the windscreen.
-next make another bend (90 degrees only - around the edge of a book or something flat) opposite in direction of the U-turn. this will be a ledge for your sensor to sit on.
-then using some rubber paint, dip the whole thing into the paint and let it dry. i've also found this at Home Depot. this will rubberize the whole assembly, and keep it from being too sharp or scratching the windscreen.
-then, affix your sensor in the right orientation, to the ledge using your velcro again.
-you might have to experiment some w/ the U-turn bend, and how thick it needs to be so that the rubber still allows you to hook or hang it on the windscreen.
best of luck. i've never made something like this, but this is how i'd do what you're wanting to do.
Make sure that there is no lift on that at speed with the top down. I just about lost my friend's 8500 that way (it was jumping up and down with the wind turbulance). Also, make sure the top does not hit the thing on the way down.....my top grazes my windscreen (when its in the down position) when I put it down.
ironic in that instead of having a bulky contraption affixed to your windshield for you to worry about, you've instead traded it for a bulky contraption mounted to (and falling off) your windscreen for you to worry about.
i just find that.... ironic.
oh, and reading back, i see i didn't mention... i'd make that 2nd bend (the 90 degree one) about 1 inch down from the top, thereby providing equal support on both sides of the screen... giving yourself about 1-2 inches to mount your sensor. you won't get exactly 2 inches b/c you'll be losing some length to the bends.
OIC. That one rear antenna is really not nearly as bulky as the old Cobra I had a couple of years ago. As a matter of fact, one of the reasons I got this one is because the Cobra got stolen so I wanted something somewhat hidden, or less obvious at least... or better yet, more difficult to steal. Anyhow, thanks again.
IDK, Mitch. The ex picked up this industrial strength velcro from his local Wal-Mart a while back (not sure if it is high-temp tho, obviously not high-temp enough). If I happen to be at/by a Home Depot or Radio Shack, I'll look for some. Thanks!
