Radar detector: Valentine 1 or Passport 8500?
Now that I have my stook, I need a good radar detector. I have used my friends Valentine 1 and I loved it. But I have also heard many good things about the Passport 8500. The V1 will cost me $400 where I can get the Passport for $200. Is it worth the extra money to get the V1?
Thanks,

Wow, excellent price on the 8500...it usually sells for $299. I own an 8500 and like it a lot. Many stook owners have V1's and like them a lot. Let me summarize what arguments will be made in this thread:
1) "Hey, why don't you do a search? This has been discussed too many times already!"
2) "Most S2000 owners like the V1 better. Why not buy the extra $100 to get the consensus best choice?"
3) "I have an 8500. My and my friend with a V1 were driving down the highway, when this cop came out of nowhere. My 8500 alerted me in time, but my friend's V1 never even went off! Buy an 8500."
4) "I have an V1. My and my friend with a 8500 were driving down the highway, when this cop came out of nowhere. My V1 alerted me in time, but my friend's 8500 never even went off! Buy a V1."
5) "Buy an 8500. The V1 doesn't have a dimmer control." "Yes it does, it has an automatic dimmer, just no switch." "Yeah, well C&D says that it doesn't." "Well, the V1 website says that their tester is biased and blackmailing them for consulting fees." "Yeah, well Valentine won't even do group buys or anything, and they are always out of stock."
6) "Buy a V1. It has a cool remote so that the cops can't see that you have a detector."
7) "Buy a Passport SR1 so that you can hide the detector in your front grill so the cops won't see that you have a detector."
8) "Buy an 8500. It is much smaller and lighter." "No, its not, the V1 just looks bulky. It is about the same size as an 8500."
9) "Look at the FAQ on S2Ki.com for info on hardwiring the V1."
Damn, I think that there are more standard replies, but that is all that I can remember. This whole 8500/V1 thing is kind of a religious war; there is no single best answer, so choose the one that fits your needs better.

Come on Marc the only reason you didn't get the ticket going for fireworks and beer that special day in Utah (see photo album section), was I was running high cover with my SR-1
. I slowed up as my Cincinatti Microwave (i.e. Passport SR-1) went off the scale. Mark and the others continued on at 110MPH. Lucky for the Utah owners group the highway was offset (height) and the poor bastard cop goodn't turn around to chase us....but he tried.....brake lights (no not here)....brake lights(no not here either)....brake lights.....(bastards got away).

Hi Brandonb
I have the Passport 8500, and it has never failed to alret me to the proximity of fast food restaurants. It's pretty good with police radar frequencies as well.
Since you can only get Passport 8500s directly from the manufacturer or used you must be talking about a used Passport for $200. That's a great price. I'd make sure it's coming from a legitimate seller since the serial numbers are of course registered with CM.
