Earlier this year Motor Trend did a radar detector shootout. The 8500 and V1 came out neck and neck (94.9 points vs 94.8 points respectively). Since then Escort updated the 8500 to the 8500 X50.

The Beltronics 985 was also a good performer (94.3 points). The Beltronics uses the same internals as the 8500 from what I understand.

As for the claims that radar detectors are illegal in Canada, they are misguided.

For our American friends (yeah, I'm in Oregon, but I'm Canadian), Canada is divided into provinces (they're kinda like states). Traffic laws vary from one province to another. The original poster is from Edmonton, which is in Alberta. Radar detectors are legal in Alberta. If memory serves, they are also legal in B.C. and Saskatchewan (the provinces on either side of Alberta). I believe from Manitoba all the way to the Atlantic ocean they are illegal. If you're traveling in any of those provinces take the detector down and hide it in your spare tire. I have heard stories of them being confiscated if they are in sight, even if they are not being used.
yup! he's right they are LEGAL in Edmonton!

The K40 Stealth 2000 w/ laser front and rear is my favorite. I have never been stopped in the 2 1/2 years I've owned my S. It's expensive about $1400 USD to purchase and have installed. However, tickets for 90mph in a 60 pretty $%^%$ high in TEXAS.

Besides it's undetectable.

Another thumbs up for V1 ... Love the lifetime upgrade plan where you keep getting a new unit whenever you feel one is due based on their upgrades/plan listing. It's also idiot proof to program/tweak.

Not to knock you or anything, but...you havent gotten caught not because of your radar, but because you are either....careful, or lucky.

K40s, (ive owned 3 of them) are incredibely overpriced, and have been proven time and time again, NOT to work.

Plus, who cares if they are not detectable if they are legal?

If they were 200 bucks, I would be ok with it, but for 1200+ install, no way.

The 'upgradability' of the V1 is a bit of a misstatement in my opinion. For example, if you have a v1.7 V1 and want to upgrade to the v1.8 it's going to cost you $189 plus shipping. Search eBay for closed listings and you'll find v1.7 V1s going for $350 and up.

So you can pay approx. $200 for the "upgrade" or you could sell your existing unit for $350 and buy a new one and be out about $70 (I'm figuring about $20 for shipping).

I moved here from Calgary, and for several months I commuted to Edmonton. Believe me, I knew I was right.

Well, Thanks for you expertise. The specs on the K40 Stealth are as good as any.

It doesn't matter how good your detector is if you are careless. Anytime one exceeds the speed limit, they better be careful. The laser diffuser is worth every penny.

The system was $1200 installed. I personally don't have to worry about removing it or the cops seeing the detector and confiscating it as well as fining me in some states.
