Default Reasons to get rid of the spare!

I have had my stook for three months now and am starting to become frustrated with my options as far as the audio system is involved. I have decided to remove my spare tire and actually free up some space in the trunk for the following reasons.

1) Without the bulge sticking out into the trunk bay, one might actually be able to squeeze two bag of golf clubs instead of one.

2) The owners manual states that the spare cannot be driven on above fifty, no different than a tire with run flat in it.

3) The spare has to be placed on the front only, meaning if the rear tire goes out you have to a) jack up the front, b)remove the tire, c)put the spare on, d) move the jack to the back, e)remove the flat, and f) put the front on the rear. In that amount of time, road service would allready be there.

4) If you are driving with somebody and/or luggage, the old tire won't fit back in the bay, and instead must sit in the trunk well. That means you have to leave either the popped wheel, your luggage, or the passenger behind.

5) Its heavy, and much more difficult than a can of runflat.

Jeez, If they really wanted to make a useful change in 2002, make it a full size spare or run flat tires like the corvette.

I'm no expert, but if someone can tell me why else to keep the spare in I would appreciate it!

I already removed the spare tire and tools to save 30lbs. I ended up replacing that weight by putting my amp in the area where my spare used to be and a flush mounted sub box in the trunk well.

as am I but I knew this going in, as the car is very small.

1) Without the bulge sticking out into the trunk bay, one might actually be able to squeeze two bag of golf clubs instead of one.

don't play gold yet... so not a problem yet.

hehe, don't bet on it... it's taken a lot longer each time I've called

5) Its heavy, and much more difficult than a can of runflat.

remember the car's weight distribution had the flat in the equation. Of course if you don't track or are not that sensitive to these changes it's not an issue.

Remember though: many places will not touch a tire after you put a can of fix-a-flat in it. It's messy, it's combustable, and some place just won't service the tire after it's just htat stuff in it. Not to mention, if you are out in the mountains or some road out in the middle of no where... a donut is much safer to me than a can of fix-a-flat.

The best reason to keep the spare is to be able to deal with a flat! I have had two. I am often in an area where cell coverage is limited, and the last time I called roadside assistance the response time was over two hours.

BTW, run flat tires are not known to be good for handling.

It's better to have it and not want it then want it and not have it!

My conclusion is: the ones who run w/o a spare are gamblers and the ones who run w/ a spare are risk adverse.

I have a spare (and I can still fit two sets of golf clubs in the trunk).

All valid points, but anytime I'll be driving in the middle of nowhere, I'll probably be driving up north and will probably (hopefully) have a sexy female companion and a little luggage. So the fact the you have to put the tools in the spare tire well, the flat in the trunk well, your luggage up front, and your girlfriend on the side of the road (maybe the flat tire instead) isn't that great an option. Even if you are alone, there is a good chance that what you have in the trunk might not fit in front (golf clubs). The Corvette Z06 comes will neither the run flat tires standard on the regular model or with a spare. It comes with a standard fix-a-flat kit.

I also removed my spare..I built a custom box and put a 12" Sub there. I think it is a great way to go.. The last time I mentioned this I got flamed..But every time I turn on the tunes I revel the decision. If I wanted to be safe and avoid risk I would have bought an Expedition. Driving this car on the track or street at anywhere near its limits is a risk both personal and financial. So the next time you see me walking down the street on the wrong side of town at three in the morning in a cell phone-less area of Houston after waiting four hours for a tow truck that didn't show and my brother got mugged on the way to help me out just keep driving.
