Default Remote Start question

I have a system with remote start. Obviously, for that to work, I need a module to hole a spare key with the chip in it.

My question is....at this point, do I even need a "programmed" key to start the car, since there is this module that house my spare key? I would assume as long as the key is cut, it will start the car right up. Any inputs??

As an installer i'll tell you this is what you need. You need a programed key that has the same imoblizer resistance as all your other keys. DO NOT under ever ever ever use the red honda key that is used to program new keys and ecu as your second key , it will wipe your ecu and you'll need a trip to the dealership via tow. Secondly you don't need to buy a "modual" that costs whatever price... all you need is a relay and about 10 feet of wire. Now as far as a cut key you don't need to have the key cut , you just need the transponder to send a signal to the key cylinder. So you just need a programed chip part of the key. I hope this helped , if it doesn't PM me and i'll go into more depth.

Sorry I read into your question more so here's more info. If you don't have a programmed key the car will start for about 1 - 3 seconds then it will shut off. Also on the dash it will flash fast a key symbol or a lock symbol. Now if you were to take the key that starts the car regularly and put it in the key cylinder but not turn the key at all and it starts - the remote starts good , if it doesn't start you still have more to hook up.

Actually, as I was reading my own question, I see the way I word them might be misleading or incorrect.

Let me put it this way. I have a alarm system with remote start. Everything work. No question about the system. I was just pointing out how my system are set up(a module that hold my spare key to get the remote start to work).

Let's say that I need to get another copy of my key. Do I need to program the key at the dealer in order to work with the car? Technically, the one with the program chip is in the module that is located inside the car. All I need to do, is get the same cut on the copy (without programming) and start the car with it. Do I have the right idea?

P.S. What is the red honda key that you're talking about?

First ignore the red key part... you'll never see it.

Second you will always need the key with a chip to start the car. Your remote starter will only send the chipped key signal to the key cylinder via a wire in remote start mode. Other wise the car is secure as if that key is not in the car.

So yes to start the car you need another key with a chip from the dealer. They will program it for you.
