Default Replacement Head Unit

Hello,

This is my first time posting and I am posting about replacement head unit for a 2004 S2000. I found several units on crutchfield.com that meet my requirements:

- Blutooth support
- Steering control
- AUX input - Front
- USB input - Rear
- USB port - Front
- iPhone 5/5s Integration

The following units match these requirements:

- Pioneer DEH-X8600BS (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130X860...S.html?tp=5684)
- Pioneer DEH-X8600BH (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130X860...H.html?tp=5684)
- JVC KD-HDR52 (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDHD...2.html?tp=5684)

Crutchfield recommended Axxess ASWC-1 for steering control integration:

No here are my questions:

1) Could I close the factory radio cover if I install these units?

2) I know modifry carries wired DCI. My primary concern is space - which one would require least amount of space?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

They look pretty standard size. FWIW, I run a Alpine CDE 143BT with a Modifry DCI tucked in the back and my door can close with no problems.

I am a total newbie, so please bear with me on this. I haven't done any dis-assembly, so I have no idea about the amount of space behind the head unit. Are you using a wired or wireless DCI? I am going on the following assumptions:

1) The the steering mounted controls are wired.
2) The wires from the steering mounted controls run to the radio.
3) The wires from the steering mounted controls will be spliced into the DCI

My preference is for the wired DCI, so what would be a good location for placing the DCI? Is there enough room behind the head unit? Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

The DCI is about the size of a matchbook. The cable from the controls plugs into the DCI. On a wireless DCI, there is a cable that terminates in an infrared emitter diode that you poke out in front of the head unit (pretty much can't see it). On a wired DCI, there is a plug on the end of a cable that plugs into a jack in the back of a compatible head unit.

I'm also looking for a HU replacement and have decided on the Kenwood KDC Excelon X998. Went and played around with a few HU's at the local car audio store. X998 has everything on your list and mine. Plus great sound and classy look with color matching variation. I'm going with the wired DCI and PnP harness that Modifry sells for Kenwood and Alpine units. My advise go and check out some units in person and play around with them for ease of use, options, look, etc.

Yes, wired. Just look through a couple of DIYs and you'll understand how everything goes together.

...or even take a look around Modifry's site. Here's one photo (plenty of other info available as well including the install manuals) of how it all goes together using the Modrify adapter harness.

If available for the selected brand I'd suggest Modifry's PnP harness. Makes install a snap with no soldering.

Thanks everyone - I feel a lot more comfortable with all the advice I received. I am going to check out a few units @ my local Best Buy & HH Greeg, and then I might pop-up here again if I run into issues

Thanks again!

That's what I'm getting. Have you installed it? Any pics or impressions. Did you use the SVC? My setup is stock.
