Default Replacing AP1 Radio with AP2 Radio

Hi Everyone,

I own a 2001 S2K and I would like to replace my OEM unit with a OEM unit out of a 2006 S2K. I really would like to keep the dash controls and try to improve the sound quality without going aftermarket. My good guess, the newer OEM units have better equalizer and sound quality so id like to install a new one and was just wondering if the wiring setup is the same so I keep all of my dash controls in tact such volume, mute, channel etc.

Please let me know if you have any experience with this before I purchase the new OEM unit. I know there is http://www.modifry.com available but I would not like to take that approach before I know that newer unit will give me better sound and I would be able to keep the stock controls.

Thanks for your help in advance.

it should be exactly the same.
i personally would go with a aftermarket one.
you can get a decent aftermarket one for a little more than the price of a AP2 one.

oem radios for S2000's are pieces of crap.
theres a HUGE difference in the sound quality and volume by just swapping the HU.

if you just want to keep your dash controls, you can always buy a modifry adapter and get better controls than factory.

HAHA Amen! It really is crap. I would love to add a aftermarket radio because it will probably cost me just as much as the OEM, but I just really would like to have the dash controls since I use very frequently. To be honest modifry is a bit pricey even though its a great adapter.

Do you own a newer S2K (2005+)? If so, do you think that the radio units have improved in quality over time?

well for me, owner of a 2001 NFR the junk oem radio with the push pull adj knobs, i felt the same as you and wanted to upgrade keeping the stock controls cheap, found a 2006 stock radio for 40 bucks w/code here on the for sale section.I think its better than the 01 cause its all digital adj intead of the knobs and i read somewere here that it has 5 more watts per ch(not sure) 35w max i think for the stock radio. And for 40 bucks, cant beat that.
Also helped a lot adding some 4 inch speakers in those panels behing the seat(got me a pair in best buy 4 like 40ish bucks).
I know some people here say they are pointless but i noticed a difference.Just my .02 cents

Your input means a lot more to me than 2 cents, to thanks man. I still plan to pick up a newer unit like you have and see the slight difference. To be honest, I am not asking for too much, but this OEM I have right now is terrible. I will also look into adding 2 more speakers in the rear. At this time I have only replaced the front 2 and they are good, but the unit is not take full advantage of their power.

So you said that the dash controls like mute, volume, ch worked on your 2001 S2K with the 2006 unit, right?

I haven't used the dash controls since the day I bought my s. it's really not hard to reach down and turn the volume up.
If it bothers you that much just get a head unit with a remote.

You should get a slightly better HU converting to an AP2 one. It won't be night and day, but you will be able to tell a difference. If it doesn't meet you needs, at least you won't have lost much money on it. Good luck.

You get what you pay for. I'd suggest going aftermarket with the HU but to each his own. The newer S HU's might be better but it won't be as much as an improvement as going aftermarket. If budget overrides all other concerns (seems likely since you're worried over the price of the Modifry DCI) then a newer S HU might be the way to go.

Are there no AP2's in your are for you to compare? It's entirely possible that you might be happy with an AP2 HU but it's impossible to tell based on a forum discussion. You need to listen to one yourself.

I use them all the time. It's all up to the individual's priorities.
