Default Replacing speakers only, worth it?

Has anyone done this on an 01 (which I hear has the crappiest speakers of them all)?

It turns out the headunit I really want is not compatible with the modifry unit or the one from crutchfield, it has all the features I want at the price I want but if I get it I can pretty much say goodbye to my dash controls (which i use all the time).

I'm not so sure anymore..... would getting some decent speakers alone be worth it? I'm not looking to win an audio show but the stock stuff sure sounds like crap..... the horrible bass/tinny sound im guessing is due to the speakers, while the lack of volume im guessing is due to the headunit?

If you get a higher end set of speakers (Bose or JBL) and possilbly look into a small low profile amp to put under the seat.

I used to have a 01 and it did have the crappiest speakers for sure!! Upgraded with a set of nice speakers (with tweeters) and a amp in the trunk (as well as the headunit with modifry, but that was because at the time I wanted to play MDs).

Now I have an 03 (bought it used two years ago) and I *think* it's completely stock, but the sound is muuuuch better than the 01. I'm not going to touch it for now...

Can anybody chime in on the stock sound post MY2001? Is it really that much better or might the previous owner have updated the system with (just) better speakers?

If I had to do any upgrade, I would again go all the way though!!! And definitively find a way to use the dash controls.

Good luck!!

I installed a set of Alpine Type-R two way speakers in my doors. Search the electronics section for my name, I posted an install thread that detailed the process. I have a MY00 and only replaced those it made the world of difference. Previously I couldn't hear the radio above 55 with top down.

Last night, I was playing music in my bone-stock S2K and my cousin asked, "Damn! I didn't know you put a sound system in there."

Thanks for the advice guys... I guess what I might do is just replace the speakers first, hopefully I like the results... if not I can always throw in the head-unit afterwards.
Actually, do you guys know if I do an ipod connection if I can control the volume straight from my ipod? (I don't even own cd's lol), if I could control the sound from my ipod then I could def. do without the dash controls.

I too have heard that MY02 and above (or 03?) have WAY better sound from the factory

Speakers will make a world of a difference especially if you get a decent amp to power them...you can even fine tune the sound with a standalone amp so the speakers provide the best quality they can.

Sorry, I'm a stereoholic...The first thing I did on my MY07 was take it into a reputable stereo shop and have them revamp my whole stereo. Changed everything out...even the wiring to the speakers themselves and had them hook up the best of the best. I believe that is my most expensive mod to the car...And I'm not finished yet(still debating whether I want one or 2 subs and where I'll put them exactly so it/they don't get in the way of my daily use of the trunk)!!!

I changed mine to Infinity Reference, then added two more in S-pods for the rear. I am really happy with the result.
