Replacing speakers only, worth it?
I have an '01 and replaced the OEM HU w/an Alpine and Modifry's dash interface, with the intentions of replacing the speakers later.
I'm so happy with the way the Alpine sounds through the OEM speakers, that replacing them has been delayed. I bought the Alpine that connects my iPod and all functions controlled on the HU. I hid the iPod, don't even touch it unless I need to sync more music...

I agree, the speakers in MY01 sounded like crap before I replaced them.
I upgraded the speakers in the doors & added 2 speakers behind the seats.
The Honda HU has connections for 2 sets of speakers.
Makes a world of difference, especially with the sound coming from behind.
You can actually hear the music on the highway with the top down.
I think I bought the upgrade from Lucid, who used to advertise on this site.
Good luck..

My 00 doesn't sound that bad stock but then again maybe the person that had it before me changed out the speakers. I find that hard to believe though since the person that had it before me was an older lady who barely drove the car. What do the stock speakers look like?
I put a JL Audio amp in the trunk of my '01 several years ago. At the same time, I replaced the stock speakers with ones made by Focal. This made an amazing improvement in the sound. Plus, even at high volume with the top down on the freeway, it sounds terrific.
sure, it helps.
just get one at a time...
speakers-->head unit-->amp-->sub-->done
btw I've upgraded my speakers first--> head unit--> the amp and sub at the same time.
remember to get the tweeters and also the speakers in the rear(behind the seat) it helps.
