I just got my s-pods in and need to buy some speakers for them.

Any suggestions?

Currently I have the stock radio.

Should I go with 5.25" 2 or 3 way?

Or should I look more toward components with a 5.25" and a tweeter?

spods are dumb , get a good set of componets up front and a 2channel amp you'll be happy.

 

I asked the same question you did a couple of years ago and after some input from the forum decided to go with the Infinity Kappa 50.7 CS components. the key is to get components that are very sensitive so that the stock radio can drive them. I really like them and disagree that the Spods are dumb. You will be amazed how much easier it is to hear the music with the top down. I have now completed my system with an Alpine PDX 4.150 amp, Nakamichi CD400 HU and Focal K2P components in the doors and it sounds great. I continue to be glad I spent the money on the spods, very important part of my system.

Whatever speakers you go with, I would definitely recommend using components instead of 2/3 way speakers in the spods. Enjoy them, good investment.

 

Expecting all people to have the exact same taste doesn't exactly seem "smart" to me. Neither does negative feedback about a product with many hundreds of satisfied owners, unless that feedback is intelligent. It's also nice when negative feedback is based on personal experience with a product. Have you actually listened to a pair of S-pods installed in a car? Or, do you just know what's best for everyone by briefly looking at a product online?

A few audiophiles who have listened to S-Pods have expressed the opinion that music sounds "best" when in stereo from only front speakers. I respect their opinions, no product is for everyone. However the vast majority (hundreds) of people who have actually listened to them in person like the sound of a 4+ speaker setup. To the "average" owner S-Pods sound great.

Some who like the sound, say they are too expensive for them. This is also an opinion I respect. High quality products take expensive materials, and a lot of time to produce. Especially when they are hand made in the USA by someone with a mortgage to pay. Again, no product is "right" for everybody. I now have S-Pods priced at the lowest price since introduction, so more people on a tight budget will be able to afford a set.

Now back to topic. Alpine & Infinity components are most often chosen by my customers. Both companies have at least a couple choices for 5.25" components or coaxials in their product lines. Just make sure if choosing coaxials that the tweeters don't protrude past the speaker mounting surface, or they will interfere with the S-Pod speaker grilles. Infinities can often be found on sale at Crutchfield.

As stated above: it is very important to choose speakers with a high sensitivity range if using the stock HU.

just a word of warning - the Infinity Kappa series (not the Perfects) are
very efficient, but they are 2-ohm and thus not suitable for most headunits
if you aren't running a separate amp. The Perfects are 4-ohm, but not
very efficient. The Reference series are 4-ohm and fairly efficient.

 

Ok now Im a little confused.

If I am sticking with my stock radio and no extra amp, what do you suggest?

 

most headunit internal amplifiers are not designed to drive speakers
less than 4-ohms - it may work, especially at lower volume levels, but
you'll be pushing the headunit beyond its design parameters. Therefore,
of the Infinity component speaker lines the Reference series is the one
most appropriate for headunit power - it's pretty efficient (92db/1w/m)
and 4-ohm. The Perfects are also 4-ohm, but because they are less
efficient (89db), they will need twice as much power for the same volume,
and the headunit alone won't have it. The Kappas are still more efficient
(94db), but since they're 2-ohm they do not meet the specs of the
headunit. On paper, the Reference series are the only ones really
appropriate for headunit power, but what really matters is how they sound
to you, especially compared to other brands. I'd generally look for 4-ohm
speakers with a sensitivity of 92db or higher that sound good to you.

 

The Alpine R's. I've heard them myself and liked the sound. They are usually a bit pricey, but I've heard of people finding them for about $150 a pair.
