The Imprint (at least on my 9887R) can only store 2 different curves. I'm not sure about the PXA-H100 that goes with the other Alpine HUs.
The way it works is that you use the microphone to take measurements for up to 6 positions in the car. Then you have the option to load 2 of three curve profiles into the 9887 (Linear, Reference, Reference with mid-range Comp). The two Reference curves sound best to me. I suppose one could do a set of measurements with the roof up, and load the Reference into Memory 1 on the 9887, then remeasure with the roof down and load the new Reference into Memory 2. If you do try this, you will need external power for your battery, especially if you are running amps. |

Engine is supposed to be off and all should be quiet when doing the setup. It takes upwards of 40 mins so is likely to leave you wih a flat battery, especially if you go for bith roof down and roof up settings.

Hello from across the pond.
Here's my current setup (details in my sig) Head unit Alpine CDA-9887R with KCE865B for dash controls. Yes, I know it could do with a clean up there :) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...7347e5c7c1.jpg Imprint is in use and makes a very positive difference, although it's negated by having both roof and windows down. The windows make more difference to sound quality than the roof position though (unsurprisingly). https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...798064fd89.jpg Speakers are old-ish Alpine SPX-177R 6.5" components. Amps are hidden above the fuel tank, an Alto Mobile ADP-304 4x75, bi-amped to the SPX-177Rs and a JL Audio 250/1 for the Subwoofer. Here's the rack https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...e51f5405f8.jpg and here it is hidden away https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...388eaa2222.jpg Finally, a Darkside V1 passenger (although it's on my driver's) side box with Alpine SWS-1043 sub https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...6bc64df737.jpg I still have room for groceries, golf clubs and all sorts. Forgot about the Ebay special iPod Classic 40Gb in the glove compartment. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...1c4cf639e7.jpg |
The amps sem to be fine temparature-wise - they are both class D so heating is nowhere near that of Class A/B designs. I see you are in Texas, which is a bit hotter than England though :)
If you do a search for gas tank amps here, you'll see lots of good installations, and most seem to be ok. The board is simply wedged in tight and doesn't move around at all. Pre-subwoofer, the smaller board was held in place with a small metal clip the installer fixed (carefully) to the metal. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...1f42616ec0.jpg I've done a number of track days and it's all survived intact. So, after a first failed fiberglass attempt following a few issues getting a router circle jig that would work with either of my rotors...I finished the door pods.
The Revs are in and sound absolutely amazing. So clear. I keep finding myself hearing music I've never heard before (and I mean...I keep checking to see if it's my cell ringing, and then rewinding the CD to listen again...). Quite a pain to get the pods right...but once done, completely worth the time and work. Not including the cost of the router (this was just an excuse to buy an expensive one...), I spent maybe $120-150 on fiberglass supplies and have resin/hardener and mat left over (that's including what I used on the first pair of failed pods). |
Finally got a deck!
Pioneer DEH-P800PRS. Auto-EQ and time alignment are nice, and modifry's DCI works well. I really like the deck! I still have the stock speakers in now, and the deck makes it painfully obvious they need to be replaced. A few more months and I'll be able to dump them for something better. After hearing the speakers, right now I'm looking into using the Pioneer PRS-720 set with Sundown's SAX-100.4, thinking to run it active with the gain set really low on the highs to keep my ears from bleeding. I can get the speakers for ~$250 and the sundown amp ~$350. I'm still not sure if I'll do a subwoofer, so I'll have to see what it sounds like. I'm really just hoping for great sound per dollar spent. So far so good :) |
Ace:
For the $250 you'd spend on the Pioneer speakers, you could pick up some SEAS 6 1/2"'s and tweeters from madisound - use 1" spacers and they'll fit with a bit of shaving of the grill on the door - really just shaving the back of the grill flat. You're already set up to run active, might as well get the speakers to match  |

i just got a clarion cz509, built in bluetooth, works seamlessly with latest software iphone 3gs. usb in the rear, radio door also closes. waiting for my modifry dci to come in and i'm set. couldn't be happier, i was also considering the pioneer 610bt, alpine idax305, sonymex3700. I chose the clarion because i never owned one before, plus it was much cheaper. so far so good, so quality is perfect for phone calls and streaming music through the bluetooth.

Looking at replacing my stock HU with an Alpine iDA-x303. I might do the Modifry DCI mod at the same time or wait on that to see if I want dash controls back.
I know I don't need an install kit, but I was wondering if I will need the wiring harness? I can't find anything that says I will so... Also, do you have to drill through the console to get your iPod cable through (to hide inside the door panel, if you know what I mean - like in Smokebombs Ipod connect pic up above)? I'll be looking at the speakers at the same time - I would change them out but I want to check them first because I believe the previous owner might have already (speakers sound really good with the stock stereo...I can feel the bass on my legs). EDIT: I just read that the x303 comes with steering wheel stereo contol outputs. Does this mean it will work with the dash control as well? Still researching... |
Installed the iDA x303. Pretty easy and straightforward. Looking to upgrade the speakers in the near future. I don't want to run an amp or subwoofer, so whatever I can get that is better than stock and will work with the iDA x303 (50 watts peak power (18 watts RMS) x 4 channels) will be good enough. Any suggestions (again, just good, decent quality sound)?
Thanks! |

Thanks! I used to have an Alpine headunit a few years back with the ipod adapter (it was a grey box). I had to search/select my songs through the headunit but I remember it being really slow to scroll through the songs. I was just curious if Alpine had improved the speed of its search feature. Thanks. |
That iDA x303 came with a very long USB cord to plug into your iPod. I control the music through the HU. The HU works it pretty quickly and efficiently. I have never had an Alpine HU before so I can't do a comparison, but I have no real issues with this one. Gives good kick to the stock speakers too.

For starters, you could budget $300-400 for a decent/nice 4 channel amp for speakers and $300-600 for speakers, then $75-$150 for RCAs and additional wiring. Then $200-800 for the subwoofer, enclosure, and associated stuff, but use the amp you have if it's appropriate for the system or buy a new one for another $200-500. That would produce sound that is loud and clean--overall very good by most standards--but it wouldn't win any competitions or blow an audiophile away. So a grand or two is my answer. Or you could halve some of those cost numbers and take the minimums on others and get a lower end system, ie maybe a system with plenty of volume but poor equalization. Or you could double some of those numbers (or more) and get a very high end system with more volume than you can stand and clarity that stirs the soul. Personally, if I were doing that, I would want to put the nicer system in a different, non-tinny-uninsulated-ragtop car, as the finer points of such a system would be hard to enjoy in this car. YMMV. |

Hi guys,
I'm mostly done with my install and wanted to share a couple things. Some tips: This is a great way/place to run the speaker and power wire (assuming amp in trunk): http://safermoto.com/jmardy/speaker_power_run.jpg Easiest way to pull speaker wire through door is to unclip/remove the connector, untape, pull the wire, retape and reinstall: http://safermoto.com/jmardy/speaker_thru_door.jpg Image Dynamics CXS64 V2 speaker in door. Made a spacer out of 3/4" plastic (like the material cutting boards are made out of). Very easy to work with and it turned out great. Problem was the speaker are too deep and hit the window stop - but just barely. So I used two layers of Damplifer Pro to make a gasket and give me some more room. The blue stuff is Permatex Super Blue RTV gasket material. I know it looks like hell but it makes a nice gasket and is easily removed if needed. I used this between the spacer and the door and between the speaker and gaskets: http://safermoto.com/jmardy/ID_CXS64v2_front.jpg http://safermoto.com/jmardy/ID_CXS64v2_side.jpg Amp rack made out of 3/4" MDF and scrap wood: http://safermoto.com/jmardy/amp_rack_bare.jpg Finished with carpet: http://safermoto.com/jmardy/amp_rack_almost_done.jpg Mostly done: http://safermoto.com/jmardy/amp_rack_done.jpg Here's the mostly finished trunk. I have a Darkside V2 driver's side sub enclosure on the way that will replace the Basslink, when I get that, I will be powering it with a Rubicon 1002 and will finish and tidy up the wiring: http://safermoto.com/jmardy/mostly_d...h_basslink.jpg |
last two are very nice set ups. i did a simlar amp rack and i would love to throw three 6s in the trunk
