i bought the pac adapter for the alpine radio and it doesnt work that well. there is some lag but the main problem is
i cannot use track forward and present up.
we do not have enough buttons and you can not program it to work with the same button.

the modifry one is nice but i wanted one i can put in my next car as well. 100 is just too much for me
the pac one was 45 or so and did all i wanted it to

Would a 9833 (the last great Alpine deck, IMHO) work with the button controls on the steering wheel?

first of all, the controls are not on the steering wheel, but on the dash, and YES. Check FAQ section on this.

I just looked into the Alpine dash control interface. Its part #DCE-865B, it shows up on the Alpine Europe website, but it is only available through European Alpine distributors. According to the largest Alpine distributor in South Louisiana, they called and Alpine USA doesn't even recognize the part number. It is a hard-wired solution that piggybacks into the stock radio wiring harness, so it has no IR delays or IR transmitter positioning problems. It works with any Alpine HU that has the small jack on the deck, any 98xx series deck I believe. I still have not found a source to buy one in the US.

Extrapolating from what Modifry has told us, the jack started appearing in the 985x series of radios so what you say makes sense.

From our website:

IR (Infrared) DCI - Compatible with various head units equipped with a factory IR (infra-red) remote control.

Alpine Wired DCI - controls specific 2005 head units that are equipped with a 1/8" stereo jack and listed as "wired remote capable".
