Get yourself some Diamond Audio S600s' for $199 off the net. Really can't beat their quality for the price and they'll mount right to the door (and clear that spool), no spacer required. Everyone that's ever heard my stereo or listened to the Diamond's has agreed w/me...

thanks for the information guys.

yes looking to use amps, dont mind spending 3-4 grand.

I guess i'm looking for a powerful speaker that will fit in the doors without hitting the 'spool'. Thanks for the info about the spool - i might have to shave it. If it stuffs up i'm sure you can get a replacement spool 'relatively' cheaply. If this is the case i might be able to run the new tarantula TR-6N after all which is good cuz they are a good speaker, i just didnt' think they would ever fit.

Any recommendation in regards to amps? I'll probably be powering the following;

doors : 6 inch split TR-6N speakers
headrests - 4 inch tarantula speakers
behind seats - 5 or 4 inch tarantula's (in my last car i fit in 5inch speakers but it was a squeeze!)

Ok...so...you've run Soundstream before and they always blew. Sure you want to run them again? Not that I'm trying to push you any other specific direction...but...really...for 3-4k, you could easily put in an Audison LRx 4.5 (4x85W) and something like Hertz, Focals, or CDTs... That'd be maybe 1.5k (US). Throw in a JL W6 and Sundown 1500.1d, Audison LRx 1.1k, or US Amps Merlin D1D, JL 500/1v2 and you'd be looking at maybe another cool 1k. KnuKonceptz.com has great prices on wiring. Another $200 in wiring and you'd be good. If you haven't replaced the stock HU, drop in an Eclipse CD7200mkII (or a CD7100 if you can find one) and you'd still be within your 3-4k range.

Also, what's the point in adding both headrest and behind the seat speakers? That's a bit overkill, IMO. Unless you're running T1R or Invidia exhaust, you probably don't need that much sound. I'd even argue that a good set of door speakers + quality amp is more than sufficient at WOT unless running an obnoxiously loud exhaust.

^ I gotta agree, it's rather pointless to have that many speakers in the S, I'm only running fronts and I can't fathom running another 2 pairs of speakers in the car.

Philbert, I am running the XTC baffles but I ported them heavily, holes on the lower sides and completely split open at the open. I just wanted some protection from the top. I also laid RAAMmat BXT and foam inside the doors (on all three locations - skin, outer and inner panels). I never heard these speakers without the damping or the baffles so I can't compare.

I do want to compare my set-up to others at the next gathering I attend. If I'm missing anything I think it might be low-range of vocals but my EQ tuning skillz suck so maybe Alpine Imprint is the answer for me?

[QUOTE=Penforhire,Sep 8 2008, 03:40 PM] The window has a sort of spool shape that moves up and down right behind the speaker.

I'd agree with this also. I'm running a set of Boston Pro 60s off alpine 9887 and PDX 4.150, and get plenty of volume with top down at highway + speed. I've seen no need for rears. If you are building something to listen to for demonstration purposes with the car parked, then maybe you can appreciate the money spent on all the speakers. Not trying to be critical, just trying to keep you from spending needlessly.

I heard the Herz and Focal speakers and really liked the Focals. Specifically the 165K2p, upgraded versions. However, after listening to the Bostons and considering the noisy environment of the S, I decided that the Bostons were providing 90% the sound of the Focals for 50% of the $. UMMV
I'm using the same speakers. They're awesome, but people have pointed out that a little sound from the rear would make the system sound a bit better. For now I'm happy with how it sounds tho.

How many concerts have any of you guys attended with speakers behind the crowd? Speakers from behind tend to distort the sound stage (since most music isn't recorded with rear channels)

It would just give you mids and highs from all directions. That's a great point tho.
