Default S2K Subwoofer Placement?

Has anyone attempted building an enclosure that is approx. the same size as the spare tire with a 10" subwoofer firing up through the panel that is below the soft top? Thinking of trying something different, and curious if this has been attempted and to what success?
Thanks,

I'm trying to make something work in the spare tire area but, sorry to say, I don't have any answers, at least not yet.

There is another thread that mentions problems with the tray rattling. I suspect that if you fire a sub directly into the tray, rattling could be a problem. To avoid rattles and maximize reinforcement, I'm looking for a way to fire a sub downward instead of upward. The cavity is very shallow, though, so I'm looking at shallow mount and small subs.

In the tray rattle thread, someone said they just removed the tray and have had no problems (except for the messy appearance). I'm probably going to try this.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Regarding tray rattle, I am thinking of cutting a hole that is similar in diameter to the subwoofer and screwing the tray to the subwoofer enclosure. This should eliminate rattle. I currently have the tray out to avoid rattling from my toolwell enclosure/sub setup and do not like the messy appearance that shows through the back glass.
Thanks,

Does the top still work OK without the tray? Why not just leave the tray out, then? You could find other less resonant materials to deal with the cosmetics. I think the other poster mentioned automotive carpeting to cover everything up.

Just to update you, I've abandoned the downfiring idea because the spare tire cavity is too darned shallow. Even facing upward, though, any sub will still have to be pretty slim. Not so sure any 10 inchers will fit in there, unless you're talking about true shallow mount units like the ones made by Phase Linear, Blaupunkt, Morel or Dynaudio.

How much airspace are you planning to leave between the top of the sub and the convertible top when the top is in the lowered position? For any sub to work properly, shouldn't there be at least a few inches?

Can you share pictures or even just a short description? I sure would like to know how you did it and what subs you used.

Thanks.
