Then added a pair of Polk 402's to the rear....much better 'fill in' and the sound stage is much better to my liking. However, the brightness is still there. I then considered adding an amp, but my logic is that it would probably provide higher volume and maybe less distortion (I typically set the volume to 5 bars on the stock head) since the pre-amp section of the head doesn't have to work so hard. But at 5 bars, there shouldn't be much distortion. That's how I arrived at my next step...changing the head since it is the source of the music. I don't know, is my logic right

markee2k,
Before my recent headunit upgrade, I was using the OEM headunit with an Alpine AMP and MBQuart speakers... The sound was good but it just seemed to be lacking. I felt that I just could not control the sound very will the OEM headunit. Installing the Alpine head unit was like night and day. The sound just seemed to jump right out of the speakers with much more clarity... You'll really be able to take advantage of your speaker upgrade with a new headunit. No matter what unit you go for - CDA, CDM, etc.. I think you'll really get some better sound from a new headunit. One more thing about the Alpines --> the CDA-78xx series are receivers and have their own built-in amps, but the 79xx series are just tuners and don't have internal amps. I opted for the 79xx series because I already had an amp. I would have gone for the 78xx series if I didn't already have an amp or didn't want to add an amp...
I've heard that Polks tend to be bright, but I really couldn't comment first hand on that. Good luck on whatever decision you make!

You guys are right, its the speakers that's too bright. Spoke with a friend whose in the high-end home audio business last night and he confirmed that the first suspect is the speakers. Looks like I have to start the search for a pair of 'warmer' speakers. Any suggestions?
