Seeking System / Subwoofer Recommendations
Well, heres the thing.....you want pounding bass, yet refuse to sacrifice your toolwell. That my friend, might be a problem. As I see, you didnt have a sub in the s2000. You may have had it in previous cars, but not the s. It is a small car, and dare I say, thin, so the bass reaches the cabin with ease. Do you really need car alarm setting off bass? Or something to sound really clean and percise? If option B, get one good 8". I have a 10" and my gain is barely on 1/4 and bass is set on my alpine to 0.
An E8a with sufficient power will get you as loud as you need for nearly every sort of bass-thumping music you can throw at it.
Now, if your goal is to be heard three blocks away, then you'll probably need to lose the tool well

I don't need pounding bass by any means. I like my hearing and would prefer to keep it. The reason I was considering two 8"s is (you got it, NFRs2000NYC) my last car had two 12s and I was happy with that sound. I never used all of the power I had, but it is always nice to be able to have a little bass in reserve. I wish I could hear the different options in an S2000 before I pay so much to get all this equipment.
One more question, how is ratlling/resonance with the different setups? Would a 12 rattle the trunk. Rattling is one of my biggest pet peaves in car audio. I'd rather have the music off then listen to shaking metal and plastic.

i have an e8a and love it.
for an 8" sub, it has very low extension and is very strong.
however, it just doesn't have the cone area to perform like a 12" sub, and i wouldn't expect that kind of performance out of it... so don't expect 2 e8a's to hit like 2 12"s.
if you run the e8a in DVC parallel, a single channel @ 350Wrms @ 2ohms from the Soundstream on each of 2 e8a's would be more than effective (imo) to drive them. i can't speak for 2 e8a's in each corner, but there are a few people who are running dual 8"s in William's boxes.
PM WLaurent and PAS2KNut (if they don't pipe up here) as they both have dual subs in the trunk.
personally -- while i can acknowledge the theory behind cancellation from the 2 8"s facing each other, sweet spots/dead zones would be highly variable based upon specific frequencies (and the associated wavelength) as the waveforms added/subtracted, and would move physically in space, according to the wavelength being reproduced.
also, given the nature of the trunk, diffraction patterns would be highly variable, due to the multitude of reflecting surfaces.
also, the potential for cancellation via diffraction patterns would exist with any dual sub setup, not just 'facing subs', and including into that fact, that bass frequencies are primarily omni-directional, i have never heard of anyone commenting on such issues as being a major problem in car stereo. any cancellation resulting troughs would almost have to be perfectly 'aimed'/timed to create any majorly noticable effect...
in otherwords, and less technically -- i seriously seriously doubt you'll have issues w/ cancellation.

Phil, thank you very much. That's exactly what I needed, and your comments are the reason I ever considered the ED sub in the first place.
Congrats on the new stork package, btw!
Edit: I think I'm going to give the above system a try. 50 million fans can't be wrong...

no problem...
and thanks for the congratulations.... twins are quite the handful. it's scarey when you realize that you go to work to get some 'down time.'

i really do love my e8a, but always get nervous when someone buys one... what if they don't like it...
seriously though - expect it (an extreme 8" sub) to hit like a moderate 10" sub. and it's definitely a sound quality sub providing deep low end fill (accurate and tight), and not a SPL monster (*boom * rattle * boom * rattle * boom * boom * rattle * boom * rattle * boom*)
expect William to possibly need you to drop ship the sub to him to get fitment right -- it requires a very large hole w/ little margin for error.
and know that it's got monster excursion (they quote an Xmax of .75" one way, but i measured w/ a tape measure (not an official nor super accurate measurement) closer to 1.25" one way excursion. so, you're going to have speaker grill problems here, in that no one makes a grill that can handle these.
regarding rattles - i get some minor rattles here and there. mainly from the top well when the top is up (but mine is so often down, even in the winter, i don't bother.
). also, a little rattle at the rear at just the right frequencies... some tightening and weatherstipping efforts would solve these quite easily, if i had the time to chase them... (instead, i chase kids...

... And three months later I get an email from Will saying the subs have arrived for fitment in the enclosures. I ended up going with two e8a's in two WLaurent boxes powered by the Soundstream Tarantula 700/2 (350 watts x 2 @ 2 ohms). It looks like both the subs and the amp are now discontinued. Hopefully, that's not a sign of something bad
I'll let everyone know how it turns out. Thanks for all the advice!

whoa!
jeez... that took forever for them to get that to you... bummer bummer bummer...
i pray and hope you'll love them, cause if not then i'll feel like a complete turd for them being so late...
