Default Sources for, and working with, plastics

Hi folks -

Ever since getting rid of my Audi S4 and getting the S2000, I've really missed something trick it came with...a version of the Valentine 1 installs you see here:

http://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/1693256.phtml

It got me to thinking about trying to put together something similar for the S2000, and who knows, maybe making it available in a limited supply. What I'm envisioning is a small elevation of the right hand side of the instrument cluster, directly above the right hand vent and the HVAC controls. The mute button could pretty well go anywhere - on my S4 it was on the left hand side of the steering column, hidden away and very handy.

My trouble is, I don't know the first thing about working with plastics, like where to get raw materials, how to form it into shapes, that sort of thing. Can any of you more advanced ICE types point me in the right direction for how to get started on such a project?

So where do they mount the actual unit?

The little remote is the easy part IMO.

You can put the main unit pretty well wherever you want. Mine was between the top of the rearview mirror and the headliner. It fit perfect. Not enough room in the S2K for this location though

What I'm most interested in learning about is how to fabricate the plastic surround for the remote display. Wiring stuff I think I've got a pretty good handle on. Working with plastics though, and actually having it look *that* factory original, is altogether foreign to me. I figured, possibly wrongly, that some of the ICE gurus on here would have suggestions on where to start.

When I did my custom touchscreen bezel, I looked to the "fabricarion" forum on Mp3car.com There is alot of knowledge on plastic/fiberglass there.

Hey thanks - that looks like a goldmine. I'll go dig around.
