Default Speaker & Amp recommendation

Hey guys, just got an Alpine CDE-121 headunit for my MY2000 and I'm looking to get some speakers and an amp. Since my car doesn't have the tweeter holes I'm planning on getting coaxial speakers. I can get Alpine stuff for a good deal but I don't necessarily have to get Alpine.

I'm looking for sound quality but, has decent bass for a speaker. I do plan on amping these speakers as well. I saw a thread about a brand called hybrid audio technologies that were pretty good speakers for highs and midrange bass which seems pretty good so I did consider these as well. I went to a stereo store and one of the guys said the Type R's are really good. I listened to them and they seemed pretty good. I wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations. Maybe there's some company that's not as well known but has very good quality stuff.

I don't really know how to match up what amp to get for what speakers so some help with that would be cool too. For speakers my budget is $300 or lower. Lower the better but, the sound quality is more important. I haven't really set a budget for an amp but, I'm assuming an Alpine one that can power whatever speakers I get would be good. I don't want to get a sub since our trunk is pretty tiny. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, I think I've narrowed it down to Alpine type R SPR-60 speakers or the Hybrid Audio Mirus M61-2.

For amps I think MRX-F65 or PDX-F4. I THINK these would work with these speakers but, I'm not 100% sure. Can anyone give any suggestions on any of the things noted or another amp suggestion?

I've heard good things about both speakers. Both amps you mentioned are probably overkill, though. Are the amp and speakers your only upgrades, or are you adding rears and/or a sub at some point? I ask because if you're only running 2 channels, the MRX-F30 bridged to 2 channels has more than enough power, and you can even get away with the Alpine 445U power pack, which also bridges to 2 channels. Both are well under $200 on Amazon, and you if decide to add rears later, you'll still have 45-55W x 4 to work with. It's always a good idea to spend as much of your budget as possible on speakers - the law of diminishing returns kicks at a much lower price point with amps than with speakers. The Hyrbid Audio Imagines are a nice bump up from the Mirus for only $100 extra and will give you more bang for the buck than spending that extra $100 on the bigger amp.

Enjoy!

[EDIT] Looking at some of the Imagine reviews, 60-100W seems to be the sweet spot, so if you need all 4 channels, the amps you mentioned are more appropriate. That said, bass response on the Imagine is really good for a 6.5" cone, so you may find that 2 channels works great for the foreseeable future. So the real question is whether you want to use some of your budget on future proofing your amp now, or whether you should concentrate on maximizing your 2 channel system now and trade up to a more powerful amp later. [/EDIT]

I'm just planning on having two front speakers. No rears or sub. I'd rather get everything done now so I'm fine with spending more on an amp if I need to. With that said would the PDX-F4 be the better option or should I be looking into another model/brand?

The PDX-F4 is a hell of an amp. You'll definitely be happy with it. Just be careful that you don't overdrive the speakers. Recommended power for the Mirus and the SPR60s are both 100W rms, and the PDX-F4 puts out 200W x 2 in bridged mode. The Imagines do a little better and are recommended for up to 150W.

PDX-F4 it is. I think I'm going to decide on the Hybrid Audio Imagines. These seem to be a pretty good fit for what I'm looking for. Thanks for the help and recommendations.

I'd seriously consider adding separate tweeters if you can, as they make a massive improvement (IMHO) to the sound quality.

You'll be able to get much more out of your equipment that way, either cut your doorcards or get some from an MY02 onwards car.

The Hybrid Audio speakers can actually be converted into a 3-way speaker so If I do end up getting different door panels I can do that although I have heard that these speakers sound better in its coaxial form.

I've got the Hybrid Audio Imagines in my car (coaxial setup) and I would highly recommend them. I'm powering them with an Alpine MRX-F65 and bridged the last two channels to power a JL 10w3v3. If you're not a basshead, just the Imagines without a subwoofer will be all you'll ever need.
