Im so glad this site is filled with ego maniacs that love to argue just for the sake of arguing.

You want my super technical explanation of why I dont think a cap is going to help him?

Again, depending on the type of music he listens to and the volume level he listens to it at, it goes like this...brace yourself...this could get ugly.

Supply and demand

I hope that wasnt too technical for you. If the demand for current is greater than what the alternator can supply, what do you have? You have a very expensive distribution block (the cap)

The cap is there to pretty much smooth out the dips in the supplied voltage...thats it...a cap does nothing else. If hes got one amp drawing say 50 amps of current and the other drawing say 25 amps of current and the cars stock electrical accessories drawing say 15-25 amps depending on whats running...that leaves the 100 amp alternator struggling quite a bit wouldnt you say?

Now...back to the question...what type of music is being listened to and how loud is the volume. That will be the deciding factor on what he should buy, if anything.

If he's using 1 ten and a set of 6.5's in the doors, listening to Whitney Houstons greatest hits he is most likely not going to need anything. If hes got every bass cd IBP ever put out, has Bass from the Crypt track #5 jamming 75% of the time pushing 4 12's, not only is the cap going to be more utterly worthless, but its also going to hurt him by .0001 in the 1/4 mile because its still a pile of junk paperweight.

So there you have it, my super technical in-depth answer. Supply and demand.

While you will find some here argue for the sake of the battle, that's hardly the point of where this thread has gone. Maybe on some other boards the huddled masses are content to let some uber-geek make all decisions for them. Here (forunately for us, unfortunately for you) there seems to be a larger than average collection of people who like to understand why they're making a particular component decision. We don't say, "Ooooh, it's more expensive, so it must be good!". We say, "If it's so much more expensive, show me why it's worth the price increase!". It all comes down to "Put up or shut up!".

Well, I haven't been easing out of the conversation... I've been asking for you to explain your reasons from the very beginning, haven't I?

What a complete let down. You had us all worked up with the feeling that you truly understood the technical side of things... then you go and let us down with such a simplistic overview as to make a freshman economics student yawn.

I must say, it was a good show in the beginning To lead us down the technical yellow brick road, only to drop us off at the corner of "It depends on what type of music he listens to". I guess ESL really stands for EaSy Listening capacitor? I didn't realize the specs of capacitors varied with Kenny G of Motley Crue.

Oh I'm sorry do you need me to spell it out for you? Here you go:

DAMN! YOUR A JOKE!

Is that clear enough for you Just do the S board a favor and go away. Go back to the big box world of Circuit City and leave us alone.

I don't know guys... maybe I should take shift's advice from earlier and look for another line of work. It seems he has outfoxed me on the technical side of things more than once in this thread alone... I could have some real competition.

If all of my competitors were like him, I wouldn't have to work!

Give up already...whiners.

You both realize that not once in this thread have you even bothered to help this guy out and try to answer his question. You only seek to argue with me because darknight has insecurities hes not yet worked out.

Oh wait...I forgot you guys "run a tight ship around here..." right dark?

You girls didnt like my technical explanation...(sarcasm noted)

All of that techno babble, only to conclude it matters what the guy listens to?
Is it necessary for you to keep saying EXACTLY what Im saying, only using more words and much more incoherent rambling?

Yeah, I think you just like arguing.

Heres my Einstein quote: Things should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

My explanation was simple and to the point. You have YET to provide an explanation otherwise.

Feel free to copy and paste your point of view towards caps here:

Oh wait...youd rather argue and have me explain something that doesnt need explaining.

Once again, Im giving my advice and opinion because that is what the guy asked for...now, go help dark sand some more fiberglass

And the really funny thing about this thread? He still hasn't provided his explanation of what ESR or ESL are and what they mean to the typical audio user.

The more I deal with self-proclaimed gurus, the more I want to say They get you all worked up, leading you to believe they have something constructive to add... then they start talking. All too often, if brains were dynamite, they couldn't blow their nose. Marketing 's, the bane of engineers everywhere.
