Default Stock head unit w/ a sub??

I just picked up my 2002 S yesterday and want to install a sub (probably the JL stealth box)..anyways, i really want to keep the controls for the stereo that are next to the steering wheel so i'm wondering if anyone runs a sub/amp w/ the stock stereo and how does it sound?.. Do i have any other options?
Thanks
-Chris

I run a Bazooka 8EL with the stock head unit , sounds fine, bass control on head unit controls subwoofer didn't need a separate controller.

You can do this, get a level converter and a amplifier and it will work fine. Ensure the amp you select has a build in low pass filter.

Tap the level converter (change from line level to pre level) into the existing speaker wires or the unused rears, connect to amp. Wire amp and sub, set low pass filter to desired cutoff and you are basically done. Good idea to put a high pass filter on the 6.5s so you cut the bass off on them and you will get less door rattle.

Just my 2 cents.

or, buy a quality amp that already has speaker-level inputs, and install away. xtant is one example, and it also lets you have a remote gain module up front so you can control the bass.

You don't have to restrict yourself to the stock head unit if you want to keep the remote stereo controls. Check out the PAC unit from Lucid...
