Default Stock HU output

Does anyone know how many watts the stock stereo HU puts out front and rear (harness)?

Also, are the front's amped in any way (integral amp)?

Thanks. The reason I ask is the speakers I hooked up to the rear speaker harness have poor overall volume as compared to the door units. They are Fosgates rated at 60RMS (180Max).

Any ideas?

Pedalhog, the OEM HU has changed in "claimed" output and maunfacturer over the years, so it depends what year you are talking about. I think the audio FAQ stickied at the top of this forum has some info on how the OEM HU changed over the years.

For matching speakers to the HU, the most important thing here is speaker sensitivity, not rated watts (providing everything is wired correctly, and fader is set correctly).

The OEM HU and any HU, really, has such low power that very sensitive speakers will produce louder sound. Look for a value greater than 92 dB if you are not using an amp.

Thanks! I will check the sensitivity of my Fosgates when I get home this evening.

I'm not going to give a hard figure, because I don't want to quote something incorrect (I actually read the sticky!), but the stock headunit, especially the earlier years, puts out VERY little power. We're probably talking about the 8-12 watt RMS range if I had to guess.

I'm sure in a bit someone who knows a hard number will chime in.

The 05 OEM headunit is made by Clarion and puts out 20 watts max with about 12RMS. Likely the 04 headunit is the same.

Before changing out my headunit, I added rear speakers in the panels that were connected to the rear adaptor of the OEM headunit. The front speaker channels seemed to have more power directed to them than the rears.

FYI: Changing out the headunit to a quality aftermarket and replacing the door speakers made a huge difference. I now have a Pioneer Premier DEH-P8MP headunit (60 watt built in amp), Infiniti Reference 6000CS components in the doors and Kenwood 5.25 in the rear panels and my system sounds pretty darn good.

OK! Finally gave up, bought an Alpine HU. Now connect to to the stock door speakers, Fosgate rears in SPods. Fantastic! Clearly worth the $400! (excluding SPods) Added bonus is that included the iPod interface so now I have full functionality also!

For any and all looking at rear speakers, bite the bullet and upgrade the HU. Anyone interested in a stock '04 HU (he he)!
