Default Streetpilot III map exchange

I just ordered a Streetpilot III, and noticed that they only let you have one region. Is there someway to exchange region maps with friends? so that i can have relatively complete info of the US?

I think it's setup so you have to buy the other 9 region codes.

They are "locked" by keys.

Of course you could "borrow" ones Cd's and keys.

I am sure Metallica wouldnt have a problem with that!!!!

The StreetPilot III has finally been released here for the princely sum of $AUD2800 (about $US1500).

I won't be surprised if a fair chunk of that is for the maps, as the owner of the local mapping data has a monopoly. In the meantime I want to investigate buying one in the US and getting the data locally.

What do they cost in the US from a cheap retailer and where would you suggest I buy one?

What is on the datacard when you buy it? Is it just a download from the CD?

What sort of card is it? MMC or something or is it proprietry?

You can find the unlock codes for all the area's on Ebay at a reasonable price. The unit does not have enough memory to hold them however. In fact stock it may not hold all the data for one area so you will need to upgrade the chip. Chip upgrades are also available on ebay.

Isn't just the SPIII with a 128Mb datacard and all maps available?

I ask again, what format is the datacard?

The Street Pilot III is available from Etronics here:

http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?store=..._code=garstpiii

Good Prices are also available from http://www.gpscity.com/

The Garmin data cards are proprietary, TTBOMK

What you unlock with the codes is the data on your computer. You then need to download to the datacard whatever area you wish to use at the time. There is WAY too much map information to have stored on the device or a few datacards at once.

Email me if you have any other questions.

James
