Angry Stupid sub question?

Stupid sub question that I couldn't find an answer for in the forum.....

I purchased a Wlaurent V2 sub enclosure and my sub (Infinity perfect 10) came today and the very bottom edge of the magnet just touches the bottom of the box. I think I could probably take a dremmel and widdle down the boarch just a touch to get the sub in there. I mean we're talking about 1/16 of an inch.

So my stupid question is this --- what happens, is it bad, will I screw something up? if the sub's magnet, or metal underneath the magnet touches the sub enclosure? Like I said, we're just talking about the very edge...

I asked the guys at Crutchfield and they said it's okay for the magnet or sub's metal enclosure to touch a sub boxes enclosure so long at the hole in the bottom of the sub isnt' covered. Evidently subs need those holes to "breath"...

So -- guys -- what do you think?

Wlaurent -- you were right -- you needed to test fit it!

well i wouldnt grind the box if anything. its probally not very thick and you can easily wear a hole.
is there a cover or anything on the magnet u can grind off?

nope..... it's the very edge of the magnet and the edge of the metal behind the magnet. I mean, I had push it hard into the box and twist the sub back and forth to make a mark inside the enclosure. When I did that it left a small black mark on the edge of the sub itself so I can see where it's hitting on the sub as well.

I have no doubt I can get the sub in there and it would just take a slight trim in the enclosure. My question is will it be okay if the magnet and/or speaker rear metal support (whatever it's calleda) touch the enclosure?

I'm thinking it would be okay..... but I'm curious is anyone else has a sub that touches the enclosure.

It will not matter if the sub touches the enclosure. The fiberglass is only a couple 2 or 3 mm thick and is a little bit flexible on the bottom/base (assuming the rub is on the base??).

I would not recommend grinding on the fiberglass.

Can you send me a picture of where the rub is inside the enclosure?

I would just make a spacer and leave the box alone.

You want at least a 1/2 inch at a MININUM between the magnet and the back of the sub box. This information comes directly from Infinity, whom I spoke with yesterday. I was looking at the same sub, but am not getting it for the exact reason you found out. It does fit and he said the sub will last less than a year.

Call Infinity technical support if you want further info.

Good luck

That's why I think he should just make a spacer.

crap..... I guess I'll have to make a spacer. It's just the very edge of the magnet that touches. I wonder if Infinity means if the hole in the magnet is covered -- like Cruthfield said?

Wlaurent -- I'll try and snap you a picture later today and send it to you. It is the bottom of the enclosure where teh magnet is touching. I can get the sub into the enclosure and secure it (as you said the bottom is somewhat flexible). I was just worried about how the sub would sound and also about possible damage.

as for the spacer -- any recommendations? MDF? I only need about 1/16 of an inch... maybe an 1/8th.

Might as well make it 1/4 inch thick. MDF should be fine, check with local car audio shops, you might find a pre-made one.

I ran into this issue when I was in a similar situation a while ago and the answer I found was yes you need to leave some room for the sub to "breath" or rather vent so it stays cool, etc.

There is plenty of space for the VC vent on the back - issue is diameter of the magnet.

I had requested that the sub be sent to me for fitment, unfortunately the buyer did not have a way to get it to me in time to meet his project timeline.
