Sub box or custom sub mount?
Hi All,
Question for you guys with subwoofers. I currently have a 12 inch sub in a sub box which pretty much fills up the whole boot, and fits snuggly into the boot well.
It sounds ok but would it be better to say make a custom sub mount out of mdf and loose the sub box?? i currently have a ported sub box.

If you are talking about just making a baffle board, then just letting it sit on top of the tool well? That is NOT a good idea. You will fry your sub. You need to look up the specs on your sub (ported and sealed recommended volumes). If you make a completely fiberglass tool well enclosure, you can get a little over 1.0CF (I think its close to 1.25). This will allow the box to fit flush against the top of the tool well.
It will look somewhat like this (mine is a 10" sub, though):

FOr a 12" sub, and a custom job, it might have a slight rise in it to create more volume, but not much.
Most subs are not designed with an "Infinite Baffle" design, and thus they all must have some sort of enclosure around them (box). You can make a custom box for it, though, like mine.

JABCAB - I made my sub box out of MDF. It is a 10" Infinity. It is not ported and it is slightly less than recommended CF. It sounds great.
The plans listed on this site for the MDF box are a tad out so you should make your own measurements if you decide to go that way.
DBzerk has made a fibreglass one and has some pics on the Aus forum.
PM me if you have any Q's.
The sub is a 900W rms soundstream tarantula 12 inch.
I currently have a sub box and it sounds ok, but yeah if the custom setup is heaps better i'd do it.
Is it true that the sub needs to be facing the back of the car? or it doesnt matter?
thanks for the feedback as always!

i thought all boxes are made from mdf arent they???
You can make them out of MDF or Fiberglass. Fiberglass will yield a larger interior volume. You will undoubtedly need a fiberglass box if you are running that sub (probably needs between 1.0-1.5CF sealed). Just letting you know, a sealed box will produce a different bass sound. Ported boxes generally have a stronger bottom end, and are better for low / sustained notes. Sealed boxes are better for punchy / tight bass response. Ported boxes also tend to be more "boomy" / loose sounding.
A custom fiberglass job usually starts in the mid-$300 (US) range, and can go up from there, depending on how detailed / intricate it gets (can get almost fluid looking....like Darkknight's). And then there is the level of finish (which can be the bulk of the cost, as there is more sanding / priming / painting).
