Default Subs in the door?

Has anyone tried mounting an 8" driver in the door, or looked into the feasability of doing so? I remember seeing pictures of the door after being taken apart, but I didn't see the thread in a quickie search. Depth isn't an issue, the particular 8" driver I'm thinking of has a mounting depth of 2.25" (57mm).

I was thinking of using a pair of 8s in the door as subs, then putting a 3"/tweeter component set in the A-pillar (a la WesMaster's setup). I don't need car-rattling bass, I probably only listen to the radio 1/3 of the time in the car, but much of my music (dance/techno) has some deep bass which I'd like to get back.

I use the S2000 as my daily car in the summer, so I don't want to lose the trunk space for a tool well sub, although if it comes to that I'll just keep my winter beater more handy, but I'm looking for alternatives.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Where? JL makes a 6" sub....smaller than my components already there. I can't see how you can get an 8" in there.

Here is another inside-the-cabin idea (see bottom of page for boxster install):

I've heard that the 6" JL's are nice. I've got two 8's sitting in between the trunk and the rear seats firing up into the the cabin. I plan on converting my setup sometime to have the 8's actually in the back shelf, mounted in it, sepreately with their own little boxes...firing up. One behind each seat, with the center being left open for venting.

OK subs in the door but where is your midbass? You will want to dedden the doors so they do not rattle like crazy! Also you may want to make the door an enclosure. Take some thing luane and silicone and dedden the door. That way you will get the best responce.

Wes: wouldn't that make the subs fire into the convertible top when it is down (almost always, for me)? Good point on the midbass - Even though the 3/4" midrang is rated down below 100Hz, I suspect there'd be a significant gap between 80 (sub cutoff) and ~160 Hz before the 3"s really came into their own.

KaCee: I was under the impression (from Lucid's work) that there's really no room for much more than a 4" normal driver or a 5.25" neodymium driver behind the seats? I'd be all over it if I could stuff the 8s I looked at (Planet Audio neodymiums) behind the seat without a significant enclosure.

I'm not shooting for a booming bass box, just respectible bass below 40Hz (which 6.5s can't deliver IMO).

Thanks for the replies!

Well, they do that right now, so "Yes". There's enough gap though, for the sound to squeeze through, the same way the subs' sound does.

my impression of the boxster install is that these are custom fiberglass enclosures...probably 6"sub...very small enclosure...no cutting of metal needed.

I can't afford to have my seat moved forward even 1"...I'm 6'3" and need the seat all the way back. For some...this might be a solution...not earth shattering bass...but would be nice fill.

low frequency sound is not directional, therefore, its location is not critical in most cases. the doors may not the be best place to install subs because of rattling issue. behind the seats may be a better place.

If you are going to use an 8" just increase the cut off to about ~200 Hz. Check what the freq. response is of the 8" if you still have the specs, I don't think it will have a problem. You will still get the low base (just not as noticeable as a larger sub) and it is small enough to be able to move quickly enough to produce good midbass. Even though subs are usually cut off lower, you can still do this and it will fill the midbass for you.

Where are you going to but the 3"s?

Just my 2 cents.
