Default Tagging MP3s

How do you guys tag your MP3s? Do you rename the file, or use a program?

I have a 9831 alpine HU and i want to be able to hit the title button and scroll through, title, artist, album, etc....without having blank spots.

It's slow, but I tend to use WinAmp. Double click on the title just above the trackbar and an ID3 edit box pops up.

If you ripped the songs from an actual CD (as opposed to getting them off a P2P, you can use iTunes to get all the info for you. Select all, then go to the menu bar and choose "Advanced -> Get CD Track Names". Do this first and see what you get.

Not sure about WinAmp, but once your mp3 files have the info you want in iTunes, you can just "select all", then select "advanced" in the menu bar, and choose "Convert ID3 tag. You can choose different versions and encodings, and iTunes will rewrite the individual files for you.

To actually get the info into the ID3 fields, try this:

For the ones I rip myself I used MusicMatch Jukebox but now use the Roxio Media Player. It does CDDB look ups and populates both the v1 and v2 tags.

The OEM RX-8 MP3 player only can read v1 tags, so I used this free program to edit the tags (or copy v2 tags to v1 tags) - it can even populate the tags based on the file name. You can set an option to have it auto scan, then when you click on a folder it will scan up all the files including in sub folders and let you mass edit or change the tags.

I don't have an Alpine, but my Pioneer and the OEM MP3 in the 8 will display the folder, the file name, and then the MP3 tags (v1 for the 8 and v2 for the Pio).

That program that I posted a link to will also rename your files based on your tags, if I recall correctly - and will even compare the tags VS the file name. So matter what, you should be able to us it to sync up the tags and the files names - no matter which any of your players will show.
