You could keep it simple and upgrade the 00 stock head to a 02 model which gives you a slightly better head unit (plus 10 watts per channel) and also a clock. There are usually a few for sale on this board. Change out the original speakers for higher quality ones and you can add an adaptor that enables you to add an iPod or other MP3 player to the stock head using the Aux switch.

You can also add a set of Lucids rear speakers.

This is a very inexpensive upgrade that keeps a factory radio that plugs right into the dash controls yet improves the sound significantly.

Obviously if you are looking for a ground pounding system you need to upgrade beyond this but if you are just looking for a modest improvement it works well.

I say don't waste your money unless you plan on buying a hardtop for it later, because you will never fully enjoy the upgraded system with even the soft top up unless you are driving below 35mph all the time. I dropped alot of money for a very nice system in the S2000 when I had it, and I regretted it because the sound quality no matter how nice your speakers are cannot be heard the the wind and road noise or even exhaust noise you get from the S2000. I guess my problem was that I loved the sound of the car by itself so much, but I also love my music , but in a car like the S2000 you can't have both.

It depends on how much you want to spend. My used 01 came with the OEM changer, so I picked up a used 02 radio (more power), got a rear speaker harness and panels from Lucid, and upgrade the door speakers with Polks (Polks in the rear too). Sounds tons better, I can hear it with the top down going 80, OEM remote controls work, OEM changer works - didn't spend much money.

I would agree that spending mega-bux on a stereo in a convertible is a waste of money.

Just talk to Lucid. You can't do better then that.

Add his rear speakers to start. Let him guide you from there.

i have an 02. the 02 stereo blows too so don't waste your time. I bought a pioneer mp3 deck and it was way nicer. I could hear it on the freeway.

Then i bought 2 kicker amps, some MB quarts and a 12" polk momo sub (all just over $1000 total). It sounds nice now

But if i was on a budget, i woulda just got the deck. It was less than $300 easy.

I couldn't disagree more strongly.

I'm quite serious about music and to me it's a essential part of any extended drive.

I have an 00", and thus far I have installed:

Alpine CDM-7871 4 X 45W Head unit
Alpine MRU - 100 300W Mono Sub Amp
Phoenix Gold Xs8 (8" subwoffer) in custom enclosure
Kenwood Excelon KFC XF167 6.5" Front Speakers

Soft top up it sounds fantastic, and unless the day is particularly windy the sound on the highway or at a very high RPM the sound is more than accepteable, and ions better than the stock system was out of the box.

In order to improve on the top down sound this week I have an appointment to add:

Kenwood Excelon KFC XR501 5.25" Rear Speakers

Do as best an aftermarket stereo as you can afford - you won't regret it.

Eddie

For the price that they sell for on this board ($100 or so), I'd just spend a few extra bucks and get an aftermarket one
