i read somewhere not to long ago about limiting the ground wire to under 18" to reduce the load on the amp. im no electrical engineer i just know a few things but it sound like you know even more neutered. are you saying u upgraded your ground wire from the neg battery terminal to the chassis? this i havent done.

180W rms... then 8ga is fine...
NS is right, good gnd cables can be run up to 3' from the gnd point.
The reasons for being less than 3' are:
1. Ensuring good current flow
2. Minimize ground resistance to prevent ground loop issues (will most likely have noise problem if the amp's gnd terminal to battery negative post has more then 0.3 Ohms of resistance)
