Default Trunk Mod Idea

I was changing my suspension today and i realized that there is a lot of empty space behind the rear wheels directly below the trunk.

in the pic, i highlighted in red the area i would cut into the car to fab a sub enclosure or amp rack type of thing. there's a good cubic foot under there on each side. I searched and searched and it looks like no one has even thought about it. hmmmm tell me what you think!?!?! would it mess up the structural integrity? what problems do you think i'll run into?

Are you thinking about cuting the Sheet Metal too? You're a brave man if you want to do that in the name of audio.

Uh I wouldnt change the structure of the car. It was designe for performance and safety. Changing that in the name of audio seems strange.

i thought about this too, but just messing with the structural integrity was too much for audio.

What i did was just use the space by the spare area.

so IMHO i woundt do it.

Lets say..."I" wouldnt do it, but it would be pretty sweet to see something that no one on the site has done yet. Cut at own risk. You are either really brave, or really....brave.

in the name of audio. hahahaa well, it definitely excites me that no one has done it. i'll be OG! i also was thinking of taking a welding class ... maybe i can even make it stronger than it original is!! maybe use square tube to reinforce it, etc. then weight is also a concern. i'm thinking it's going to add 150lbs+ = not good for the track. so having it be removable will be in consideration also.

plus if i make it out of wood... and it gets wets, thats not good.

in conclusion, if i actually execute this idea, what if it sounds like crap. oh man that would suck.

Just make sure you use heavy gauge sheet metal. Equal or thicker than what you cut out. Go for it man. This should be good.

I would also wait until I had a friend named Raymond R. McHenry so he could calculate the MOI and occupant kinetics of the modified sub-frame. Just to ensure that a rear-end collision would not launch myself and my passenger out of the car because I dicked with the crumple zones.

I can certify from experience that that very section of the car is an integral crumple zone. If it does not hurt someone it will likely transfer the collision forces to parts of the chassis that can not be easily repaired. You have no control over someone running into you - they may be an accident lawyer and decide to sue you for their injuries because you modified your car, effecting the design and resulting in them having more severe injuries.

Then again - you may build a better/safer mouse trap than Honda.
