Default Tweeters for a MY08

Has anyone installed new tweeters for their S using the standard mounts? I'm not very familiar with audio, but I haven't found a thread with just tweeter information - I'll get some 6.5" shallow mounts as well (DB651s), but I'd really like to replace the tweeters at the same time (DB1001), add and amp and maybe add a sub (db1040DVC).

Also is it worth upgrading the stock wires?

Thanks =)

You have to be careful of the tweeter size. I ended up making an adapter out of some flat aluminum for some CDT components. Then made the adapter for the door speakers to use the 6.75" midbass.

I replaced all the wires and the battery terminal for added flexibility and looks. I am not sure how much difference the wires made but I wasn't comfortable running 200watts through such small gauge wire. not to mention I would have to run wires anyhow from the trunk to the head unit. Feeding the wire through isn't all that difficult using a clothes hanger.

If you need wires I have everything except one terminal which is standard. I just removed the stereo from the car to get ready to trade it in. I think I might keep the speakers for the next car but the wires are cut to the right length of the s2k. I also have some mdf cut to replace the spare for a mounting rack for the amp.

Thanks scareyourpassenger - unfortunately I don't know how to do ANY of that, so I'm probably going to have to pay someone to do it... I'm sure it'll cost an arm and a leg haha. Did you also replace the speakers behind the headrest? It looks like if I remove the covers, it'll never go back in properly...

Also which tweeters did you use? I typically buy my wire from monoprice - can I use something like this or do I need in-wall ones? http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

I bought like 100 feet or so for my home and I have quite a lot left...

I did replace the roll hoop speakers but I would never bother doing it again. They are small but tuned and replacements are hard to find.

Not familiar with your guy's oem pods, I got none in my AP1. Here are some tweeters I recommend getting and are very likely to fit:

The best $20 you can invest in tweeters haha. Vifa are OEM manufacturers for many branded products.

I don't recommend replacing the stock wiring. Tweeters never see hundreds of watts or they would all burn out. It's a waste of money.

I saw your install... that's pretty crazy.

I'm not much of a DIY-er so I don't know where to start or find the right equipment. I'm thinking of:

HU: Pioneer DEH-P7200HD + Modifry

Amp: Pioneer GM-D9500F

Speakers (Polk):
db1040DVC
DB651s
Originally DB1001 - but the tweeters you sent - are they better than most "stock" ones?

The thing I'm concerned about is that after all this, it could still sound like crap since the car is so loud....

Not much you can do about the car being loud other than the OEM hardtop.

Since you like Polk, here is their top of the line tweeter:

Expensive, but good quality stuff you might say, maybe even worth the price. Not sure what they retail out of the set like that but here is the Vifa before being badged with Polk lettering:

Sometimes, the end brand does modify them a little bit, but there is not much you can do to a tweeter to adopt it for car use. Most likely they added a flashy mounting cup that's actually inconvenient because of the size. The base Vifa driver has a smaller mounting frame which is crucial in a car where you have no space to mount it in.

If you want the basket less version just to glue it on it's here, 3/4 version:

I tried these out in the S, it was the 1 inch version, like the Polk SR version. I don't recommend them in a car, they beam quite heavily. That means unless you sit right on axis, with the tweeter pointed at your ear you are not going to get a good frequency response. It will drop quickly in the higher frequencies. The 1 inch soft domes are much better for off axis car use, which is why I linked you to that one. If you want an even better one, get the new NE series that I'm using. They might not fit behind the panel though:

Why would you get coaxials and separate tweeters? Just get component speakers, that's a far preferable way to go. I have Polk MM6501's, and they fit/sound great. You should consider Dynamatting the door at the same time, it makes a huge improvement in the sound.

I think those tweeters would work for me - I noticed you are in SoCal - I know you do everything yourself, but is there a shop you can recommend in Orange County?

I will start a list and start shopping soon - another question though, I don't listen to music with the bass turned up too heavily, but I'm assuming it will still be worthwhile to invest in at least one subwoofer? Do I HAVE to enclose it or it just sucks and rattles if not?
