Default Upholstery tips and tricks.

OK. Just made this:

And got 10 yards of this carpet, plus some contact cement.

Now I need to form a happy marriage! I'm trying to visualize the best approach and I am thinking of wrapping a long piece around the sides first and then making a flat piece for the top as the best way to keep corners/edges from showing.

Any advice?

I would wrap the top first and make cuts at the corners to fit the carpet around the sides as they are most likely not to be seen. Also remember to pull the carpet tight so you wont have any issues with it bubbling. What type of glue are you using again? Usually 3M spray adhesive works well.

Its difficult to explain how to cut the carpet correctly, but what you should do is go to a stereo shop and look at a prefab box and you will see how they cut the carpet to make it look like one piece.

To be safe...put a dab of this stuff on a piece of the carpet, and let sit for 5 minutes. Im not sure, but some of these will actually EAT, or melt the carpet fibers.

I did use it for the black box in the background of my 1st pic 5 years ago... And it does list cloth+wood under uses... But yeah, I can test it on the new material.

3m spray adhesive is the easiest to work with and works fine.

I would wrap the top first, the sides will not be visible in the tool well.

Wrap the top and let it over lap as much as possible on each side, before applying adhesive, pull the sides down, you will see where the natural creases form, at this point, I just use a razor and cut down the crease. Now apply adhesive, put the carpet down, and then fold over the sides and just start putting it down, its pretty simple, and remember, the sides wont be seen, so you dont have to make it perfect, just make sure the top is good. Good luck. If you really mess up, just pull it off and try again!

What do you mean by natural creases?

When you pull it down across the edges, on the corner's of the box the material will crease a certain way. U pretty much want to cut out the excess carpet generated by the crease. Try it real quick, you will see what I mean immediately.
