How do I get the Focal Utopia tweeters to mount in the stock tweeter location? They don't seem to fit past the posts on the tweeter cover. Do I have to cut the tweeter covers away to get them to fit? Any info and pics would be GREATLY appreciated.
Second question, where and how did everyone mount their crossovers in the doors? There is an obvious area on the door panel for it to fit in. How did you secure it and run the wires to it? Again, any info and pics would be GREATLY appreciated.
I mounted the new tweeter mounting cup to the stock tweeter pod. I did this by Dremeling out the stock grille to the point that the new mounting cup fit into it flush yet tight.
Once the cutting was done and it fit into the stock pod perfectly I used the stock mounting metal bracket and using a small nut and bolt bolted it to the new mounting cup.
And as for the Crossovers:
As a rule of thumb mounting them in the doors is not the best idea but if you want to,... just make sure the plastic is not ripped at all (water/moisture protection). You can mount them in the 'inner pocket' like area in the door. Secure them with industrial velcro locking strips. To get the wires into the pocket just cut a very small hole in the side of the pocket or the plastic and run the wires in. Might be a good idea to seal the hole with some silicon just to be safe.
John makes an excellent point about not putting the cross overs in the door - this past weekend i put a set of diamond Hex's in the doors. placed the cross overs under the dash - reason being is not only water but think everytime you close the door or you passanger closes the door the cross over will take a beating
But now I have two more problems. The tweeter mounting cups do not fit between the two posts on the tweeter covers (the tweeters themselves don't even fit without bending the posts). If I remove the posts I'll have no way to secure the tweeters to the covers. What should I do? Anyone who installed the Utopia tweeters please chime in.
Originally I was going to put the crossovers in the car cabin. The problem was the speaker cable I bought was braided and I could not fit two sets through the rubber gromets between the door and the car (I just barely got one through). I figured it be easier to run the one through to the crossover in the door and then run the two separate wires to the speakers from inside the door. I guess I could still mount them inside the cabin if I buy some thinner non-braided speaker wire to go from the crossovers to the speakers (it also means soldering one of the wires to the tweeter wire since its not long enough, which I'm not crazy about doing).
How did you guys mount the crossovers under the dash? Did you still use the industrial velcro?
At this point the crossovers seem less of a big deal as figuring out how to mount the tweeters. Until that is figured out I can't put my doors back on
Can you take a few pictures of the tweeters for me I need to see them next to the pods... I'll come up with something.
Its best to use a 4 conductor wire to run wire into the doors. It very much the easier way to do it. I have 4 conductor 14 gauge wire running into my doors with room for more if needed. Its hase a twist in the wire to help cut down on the 'noise' that might enter the wire. As for using that kind of wire in you S2k... you don't really need it.
As for mounting under the dash, you can used velco again or tie-wraps which ever you like.
I have the Focal 165W speakers and here is how I mounted the tweeters.
I removed the tweeter from any mounting hardware. All I had was tweeter and wires. Then I wedged the tweeter into the tweeter pod in the door. It fit tight in there.
Then I put the factory bracket on the back. I used a little hot glue to hold the bracket to the back of the tweeter. Put the two screws in and connect it to the crossover and you are done.
I was thinking of trying something like that. The tweeter seemed to just barely squeeze between the posts. I'll give it a try.
Another problem came up. I purchased lucid speaker adapters with the extra depth kit and speaker baffles to mount the woofers in the doors. Unfortunately the posts on the adapters do not line up with the holes on the speakers. My question is what is the easiest way to get these speakers mounted? Should I just forego the lucid adapters (he said he refund me the money if they didn't work) and just use MDF to make an adapter? Or should I make some kind of adpater out of MDF to mate the speakers to the lucid adapters?
Jim, if you could provide me with some detailed guidance on how you mounted your woofers I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks again for everyone's help.
Had a professional installer put my Utopias (2-way) in last year.
RE: X-Overs - instead of the door or underdash, I had them mounted in the shallow compartments in the wall behind the seats that some use for rear speakers. This way I can get at them if I have to for adjustments.
RE: Tweets - I was able the keep the stock grills. I wanted a stealth look so people would not see what I had and want to rip them off. Here's a bad pics of the tweet install from the back.
