Weakest Link?
Based on the Garbage in garbage out formula, the general rule is, you can have million dollar speakers that will reproduce crap really well. Basically, a good clear singal is first and foremost. They are hand in hand, but a HU is a must if you want good speakers, but good speakers are a waste with a stock HU. So the answer is head unit.
I seriously don't think the "specs" of the stock HU are as bad as most of you think in terms of distortion, S/N ratio etc (at least the '04 unit anyway). It's main drawback is just lack of decent power.

Depends on how you listen to your music.
If top-down, 85-90 mph - the volume level on stock HU will distort the he** out your speakers. Putting good speakers in will only cause you to distort the he** out of good speakers.
If top-up, 65mph - HU load will be low and better speakers will make a big listening difference IMO.

If you decide to just add speakers, make sure you get efficient, high sensitivity speakers that are designed to run at lower power levels. Otherwise the volume levels will be even lower and you'll end up cranking it up into distortion just to hear them even when you're parked with the motor off
