Default Will Focal 5WS fit behind seats?

After fair amount of searching, still not sure how to tell what magnet size will fit if I cut the panels behind the seats or use precut lucids. Anyone know if these small subs from Focal would fit back there without cutting metal? I think it would be pretty cool to combine a pair of these with some coax or component speakers placed in S-Pods for some real rear presence. Any thoughts?

Im not 100% sure, but a big 99% hell no......

Focal speakers are huge (magnet wise)

Id say all big boy speakers, Focal, MBQuart, etc.....are too big for rears without cutting metal......

The 5WS is small - IIRC, it uses the same basket as the 136 series Utopia and PK's - but it does need about 1/3 to 1/2 cube to sound decent.

From what I've seen there'd likely be room without cutting, but you might have a hard time finding the airspace....

Yes, none of the good minisubs I pointed to seem to really have the numbers for IB but they don't really need boxes that huge...

An Accord-owning friend had a 5ws in an enclosure that he could stick in the glovebox (which is oddly enough where he kept it...)

If you do a decent job of sealing it, give it plenty of power, and cross it low, you'd get some alright bass.

Though at the same time, for the $250+ it will cost you just for the drivers, I'm sure you'd be happier with a trunk-mounted 8" in a WLaurent box

5WS is optimized for a ported enclosure - so it'll tend to need more airspace. I tested on out in a sealed box and found it quite underwhelming.

The older 5KX works quite nicely in a sealed setup - especially with some extra power. But they're pretty hard to find these days

I saw a used pair of 5Kx's on ebay recently at a great price. I passed on them because I had no use for them at the time

Anyhow, to the original poster: anything you stick back there with sub intentions in mind is gonna be a crapshoot.

Maybe you should experiment with a pair of the inexpensive Tang Bands or MCM's then upgrade to the Focals based on the results...

Looks like I'll be doing some experimenting, then. Thanks for the replies.

Okay, so I finally got off my ass and pulled one of the panels off to measure. Looks like the "window" for the speaker magnet only measures about 3" x 4" This would seem to suggest that a 10 cm (almost 4") diameter magnet is not gonna fit. Would have to take out some metal, though not much. The part that would need to be cut, ground, melted, whatever looks to be about 1/8" thick at most. Still, that would be tough sledding with an end-grinder like a dremel, and there's not a lot of room to maneuver any sizeable power tools back there.

Plus the issue of enclosure size which has been brought up. Looking at about at most a 4x4x6 inch cube. That WLaurent box in the trunk is starting to look better. Not quite ready to give up yet, though. I guess I just really like the idea of these 2 small drivers "stealth installed" with one behind each seat. Sure they may not sound earthshakingly awesome, but in that small cabin, so close to your back, with a decent amp driving, I think you would definitely notice them. I'll have to think about this some more.

You could try using a standard car audio mid with a smaller magnet. Stiff suspension, strong midbass, and a smooth low-end rolloff would all be nice.

Put one in the door and don't put an HP on it so you get all of its extension. Put another one somewhere else (I guess behind the seat is what you want) and LP it where the other driver starts rolling off--probably around 150 Hz.

Your low end would go from this:

...oooOOO

to this:

..ooOOOOO

Hi
I'm just starting the install in my S2k, I've had the doors off to look at the standard speaker placement, and i saw the large space that is at the opposite side to the standard speaker postion.
Now this space would be big enough for a Genesis Ovel Sub (there 6x9 size but they are TRUE subwoofers).
You would have to cut the doors and make custom grills, but having played about in the Genesis demo MINI, that ONLY has these as subs i know that thay can produce amazing results.. and it hits over 137db.

http://www.genesis-ice.com the subs arent on there web site yet as there a brand new product, but if you contact a genesis dealer thay should be able to help.
