Default Wiring in crossovers without an Amp

Evening all,

So I've had a sneak preview of what santa is bringing me, a set of Alpine SPG-17CS speakers and Pioneer 9600BT headunit I won't be using an external amp for now.... Car is a 2005.

My question is, do I need to use the crossover box that comes with it or ditch it? I see two options:
1) Use existing wiring for the new 6.5" and tweeters, like for like.
2) Or take the existing 6.5" speaker wire to feed the crossover box, then run cables to the new 6.5" and tweeters...

Also, where do I apply the sound deadening tape? On the outer skin of the door, or between on the inner skin? Or I guess on the door card itself?

Have a great xmas all!

Graeme

you definitely should use the crossover that comes with the speaker, its been tuned specifically for that set of speaker. easiest way to wire it would be option 2. as for where to apply sound deadening, you should understand how it works first. it stops sound from resonating by adding mass to the panel you applying it to. the inner door structure is pretty rigid already so you should focus on the outer door skin for the most impact. you also dont need to cover the entire panel either, a few patches near the center of the outer door skin where its the least rigid should do the trick. but most of rattle will probably come from the door card/panel.

As above, 2) is the way to go. The oem speakers contain a crossover within the woofer.

Good advice on sound deadening, too.

FWIW This job is best done when the weather is a bit warmer (if that ever happens in Scotland!) as the plastic clips you will be moving are less likely to break, and the sound deadining stuff is easier to apply.

Use the crossover which came with Alpine speakers. They are prolly designed to handle more wattage, as compared to OEM x-over. Just in case you do add an amp, later.
