With USB memory sticks being all the rave these days, what about a headunit with a USB port on the front? You throw a bunch of MP3's on a memory stick and plug it into your headunit?

dumb idea?

yeah, i guess, but more compact, scratch resistant, and much easier to manage files than having to burn CD's...

I like the idea. It definitely has the advantage over a CD in the simple fact that you just add/delete songs at your discretion.

I would be happy with an auxillary USB port like they have for the ipods and RCA ports. I believe Sony makes a HU with a option for using a Sony memory stick but I think they use a screwy storage algorithm that limits the quality of MP3s to 192.

they have something like that already, but it is not a USB port. anyway, they have that in the Eclipse CD5444. Eclipse also has another unit, AVX 2494 with a built in 20gb harddrive, to top it off, its a TFT monitor producing over 1,000,000 pixels.

they can be seen here Eclipse website

how about USB plus a Hard drive that has a transfer rate of 45345 MB/sec?

that way, the USB stick does not have to stick itself out and ruin the looks. not to mention, you won't accidently "break" it.

But i'm sure the cost of the unit will jack up sky high. Until the prices have come down, i'll stick to my CD-R

Great idea. It's only a matter of time until this happens. . .

I had this idea about a year ago over at ClubRSX.

But, I would just end up burning all of the songs to a MP3 CD anyway.
