I'd suggest buy a new head with satellite radio. It doesn't make sense to invest money in the stock unit. Especially when you consider a compromised solution. www.soundgate.com used to have such a conversion. I know SIRIUS has stated they will have one [to combat the XM/GM and Toyota agreeements] soon. Regardless, anything done this way will leave you with no display. A dealbreaker as you're trying to track so many stations.
One of my major objections for satellite radio was the antennae. After reading these forums, I placed my antennae in the "secret compartment." Extremely happy with the stealth and radio performance.
The Alpine 9856/9857 seems to be a popular choice now [$199 to $349]. Toss in a Modifry DCI and SIRIUS, and you're looking at about another $200. These are retail prices, so you can do better. If you're not an iPod person, you can find a cheaper head, too.
A secondary "plug 'n play" radio can be had for less than half its price. It's a workable solution, but I'll bet you'll quickly want more. It gets tiresome having to pick the thing up off the floor after some spirited driving.
I've been upgrading my stereo in pieces. I noticed a significant improvement in just putting a new head in [Eclipse 8445.] I can also say from being a plug 'n play guy that I'm extremely happy with my decision.
