2000 F20C AP1 Rebuild or new build
I purchased a 2000 ap1 with 252k miles on it about 1 month ago. I want to either completely rebuild or build a new F20C but don't quite know where to begin. I'm assuming all parts will be used and there is no place to buy new parts? Any advice on where to look for parts and where to begin would be appreciated. I'm only 19 so this will be a long process due to income.
it leaks some oil, and it has started to make a weird noise when I start the engine. It sounds like the belt. It makes a very loud squeak. It is my daily driver and my only vehicle right now so I haven't taken the engine out to do a full inspection. When I first bought it, the engine would struggle to idle and it would sometimes die if I pulled up to a stop light. That was a very quick fix though, all I had to do was clean out the IAC valve and it works perfectly fine now. The fact that the engine doesn't sound right when I turn it on just worries me. It runs perfectly fine afterwards. But regardless, I'll be supercharging it later so I need to rebuild the engine eventually.
As Chibo said do a compression test first. If everything is normal then check the TCT (chain tensioner) for the weird engine sound when you start the engine, change your engine-transmission-differential oil and new oil and air filter and plugs.I think your F20C is gonna be just fine.

If you read these pages regarding rebuilds of this engine you might have second thoughts. If I were in your shoes I would do everyhing humanly possible to diagnose and correct any existing problems rather than rebuild that engine. Also, if the engine turns out to be worn out, I would look for a good used engine, I would not attempt a rebuild or new build. I would hate to see you end up on the long list of failed rebuild attempts.
Good luck whatever you do, and keep us posted.
