Default KTuner - Alternative to Hondata

http://ktuner.com/0609s2000/

Looks pretty cool. The only downside I see is that Real Time end user tuning isn't 'Final' yet but I don't use that anyway. I take logs, review them on my own time then makes changes.

Also, so glad to have another alternative to Hondata. Finally some competition so they can start feeling a little less complacent and maybe listen to customer input.

But some of the biggest things that may make people switch to KTuner are :
Disable Sensors and OBD2 Monitors
Custom Sensor Adjustments for TC, Flex Fuel, etc (2)
Programmable Outputs (4)

There are posts on both this forum and the official Hondata forum where people using Hondata are having trouble passing OBD2 Readiness checks. It would be nice to have a surefire way to do so.

Flex Fuel has been asked about but I haven't seen a response from Hondata saying yes they will support it.

Programmable Outputs - This is awesome! KTuner promises 4 of them. Hondata only has 1 and that is boost control.

Anyone have any idea on cost? I'm getting excited about the prospect of selling my Hondata or having Hondata stepping up their game. Either way, you and I will benefit!

Their flash based obd2 port block or reader whatever you want to call it looks a lot like a tactrix cable used in the Subaru/Mitsu world for a good open source tuning solution. Although the Ktuner is about 3 times the cost. The cost savings over flashpro are attractive thats for sure. I would imagine the take rate on these will be slow until it is proven somewhere.

Saw this not long ago, another downside is that it's only for 06+S2000s and their are more hondata tuners than ktuner tuners....I am curious to see this verus the hondata flashpro piece

Yeah, Colby Boles (who developed the original OpenPort 1.0 cable for Subarus then consequently EVOs, then the OpenPort 2.0) seems to certainly be behind this. He has also exclusively licensed his work to some guys (forget their name) who do Mini Cooper tuning who also use rebadged OpenPort 2.0 hardware. I'm assuming a similar arrangement exists here. A couple years back, I had asked for his help in getting the OpenPort to support reflashing BMW E36 ECUs and he declined stating the previous arrangement with the BMW Mini Cooper guys because that ECU also is a Siemens C166 like my E36 and he had given exclusive C166 reflashing rights to them. Bummer.

So we have KTuner who purchased the exclusive licensing rights for our beloved AP2 S2000 ECU. So you can be sure that KTuner themselves didn't come up with the reflashing hardware/software but probably did do the work disassembling the code with IDA and labeling maps and creating a graphical user interface etc.

Hondata is also just reflashing the existing code and both will alter the same maps. Though at some point they could alter the code for additional functionality like people have done for free in the Subarus and Mitsubishi communities.

So, even though it's not as free of a lunch as it is for Mitsubishi and Subaru owners (self included since 2005), it is still good to have an alternative to Hondata who I suspect is getting comfortably complacent with the lack of competition. Their unwillingness to expose additional maps (of little effort to them) is not going to be good for business. I hope and do think KTuner will be different and actually give the consumer what she wants.

I would be up for beta testing their solution and I could compare it to Hondata which I already own. And just to prove I'm not just any geek off the street, you can search under my other username 'MRF582' on RomRaider forums to see that I have been tuning Subarus since 2005 and that I am the project founder/leader and on the development team to make a DIY tuning solution available BMW E36 ECUs.

If either company wanted to make real money, either should develop a cheaper effective alternative system for pre 06 S2000s as there are more of them than post 06 models....

It looks like the Tactrix cable because that's exactly what it is. The OBDII dongle is only a small piece of the puzzle in tuning factory ECU's, it's just a simple interface device. Someone has to crack the ECU, write the code for the software, write the firmware, inject custom code to add boost support, speed density, etc. It's great someone did this for "free" for the Mitsu/Subaru world, but those ECU's already come from the factory with tons of advances support (ie, boost control, closed loop at that; injector scaling; yada yada, the list goes on).

Then there's the whole realm of support... I work on a lot of makes/models, stuff like TunerRT (which supports Nissan OBDI ecu's) is cool and all, but laughable compared to the Nistune products & support I get from them.

Ya props for whoever came out with it, and if it's "better" than flashpro that's great, but flashpro at $600 MSRP is reasonably priced imo, especially considering they can be had used for even less. Unless there's a significant amount more functionality, I can't see too many folks running this vs hondata. A solution for the 00-05 folks that isn't expensive would be great.. not sure how feasible that is though.

00-05 is never going to be cheap - the ecu isn't reflashable like the 06+ are
