Smile 2nd wastegate failure in 2 weeks

brand new 8psi Tial wastgate attached to a custom tubular manifold (near copy of full race design w/out robotic welds)

I took it on a 150 mile drive with my car club and had as much fun as I've ever had driving my S on Sunday. It was a blast being in and out of corners with boost. (quite frequent corners on the savage 23 mile stretch from Idaho City to Lowman, ID) Just 20 miles from home I heard the sound of free flowing exhaust and saw I was holding an amazing 0psi. I knew exactly what it was, we pulled over, popped the hood, and sure enough, the bottom bolt on the wastgate had given up. It was attached with a nut on the back end with a locking washer. It was no good as the head of the bolt sheared off (due to heat?) and left the device to dangle from the top bolt.

My mechanic seams to think that the vibrations from the manifold are horrible and causing me trouble with the hanging wastegate. He thinks maybe a switch to a log from inlinepro would cure my car. I'm sick of driving this thing on my weekends and giving it back to my mechanic when I'm home.

Anyone else have some insite into this trouble?

Ahh the stories of tubular manifold. The longer these are out the more issues you will see. The only ones who wont have issues are the non-daily drivers.

I have to fix cracks on mine once a year. Definately considering going to a cast manifold.

i think your best bet would be switching to a 44mm wastegate with a V-band. change the flange on the manifold and get a 44mm.

The problem with the wastegate bolts happens to virtually all turbo manifolds including log style manifolds. That's a huge reason why people use v-bands.

Find the best bolts and nuts you can (I prefer to use a threaded wastegate flange instead of nuts) and torque them cold, hot, and then again after a few cycles when hot. High grade bolts should not shear. One more thing that can help is the Turbonetics Deltagate gasket. The stock Tial gaskets are crap.

Get some sort of engine bracing to take edge of vibration, I think I saw one build for full race type manifold.

^^^
some good ideas here thanks a lot guys,

I do have an engine torque damper which I was hoping would help, I'll make sure to re-torque these bolts next time they get hot, and ya the gasket with the tial wastgate is garbage

if it comes off again I'm going to hash it out myself, get a forged bolt with locking nuts and washers on the other side. I had a friend reccomend some high temp thread locker, would anyone else reccomend this?

Tim what tq should I get these bolts to, and can you link me the turbonetics gasket?

Torque depends on your bolt size. You should be able to find some specs online for that.

Use head studs on the wastegate...
