The factory CEL is driven by error checking algorithms in the ECU. AEM could developme something similar but it would have to be a lot more generic because each car is so different and when you start tuning a lot of the parameters change. I think you would end having to program in what to look for in order to throw a CEL for everything but the most basic errors.
Like what? If it misfires, the engine feels rough. If the O2 sensor fails, you get bad O2 readings.
CELs are commonly referred to as idiot lights. I guess the assumption is that if you install a AEM you know what you are doing and don't need idiot lights. Reverse engineering them is a tad pointless.
