Hey! Wait a minute. Stop the music! By "SKS turbo" I meant the full-auto version. Anyone, uh, um, er ... running that? ;-)

As far as your understanding of CARB requirement go, they are a little off (I believe). What the turbos MUST have to meet CARB approval is an internal wastegate (so gases that bypass the turbo are released into the downpipe (and thus thru the cat) as opposed to the atmosphere... ). It doesn't matter how dirty the air is that is spinning the turbo, just where it goes afterwards. At least this is how I understand it... and it is specific to CARB standards...

Most (if not all) production turbo cars just run a standard turbo setup (non-rear mount) with an internal wastegate setup.

Thanks, John. Thank you for taking the time to explain these things to me.
Also, should a car's rear end always be beefed up when adding a turbo charger? IOW, is there a threshold with respect to the amount of horsepower: the more horsepower the beefier the rear end; the less horsepower the less beefier rear end? Did that even make sense?

PS. My Pit Bull is jealous of your Doberman because he isn't allowed anywhere near my S while your dog rides shotgun.

Late.

Depends on the car..... S2000 is good for over 500hp on a stock rear-end.

R200 swap FTW if you add more????

(non-turbo 300ZX rear end has done me well in the past)

Well, the end caps on the diff are notoriously weak (something to do with the type of metal casting used in the manufacturing process... or so I have heard). It will need to be beefed up. There are accounts of people blowing the rear diff at stock power levels... it all has to do with traction and how well you "hook" off the line. You could probably run 400+ on the stock rear end, if you NEVER launched it, and only pushed it from a roll...

Cryo treating cures the casting defect, as I believe it effectively forges the metal after the fact... then you have to worry about wheel hop and the shaft play that it induces (at higher power levels... not sure if there is defined limit threshold or not...) causes the ring gear to shred teeth as the pinion gears wobble up and down (or so I have read).

I fixed all the issues by getting a Comptech reinforced rear end, cryo'd everything, and am having it solid sleeved (need to send off to Puddy). I hope it is able to hold up to 400-450rwhp in daily use...

Instead of the R200 swap, you could also go with a PuddyMod rear end. There is one on phil's car that Mase is tuning now... rather expensive, but apparently pretty much bulletproof...

Later

John
