ap1 or ap2 tranny
Hi guys,
I need some input. I've got an AP1 and thinking of doing a turbo application in the future. I've heard very good things about the AP2 tranny on a stock AP1 model, but does this change if there is a turbo set up. I know the gears are shorter 1-4 in the AP2 compared to the AP1 tranny, but with a turbo application is it not better to have the longer gears of the AP1 tranny in order to keep boost longer in each gear to get full horsepower potential?
Thanks

The longer gears are better for turbo. Some turbo guys even get a PPG tranny with even longer gears than stock ap1.
edited *ap2 only has different syncrhos*
ap1 has deep gears to begin with. how much power you looking for? if around 400-500, i wouldnt even worry about changing anything. if you blow your ap1 tranny, ap2 tranny wont hurt your performance being shorter, and you can offset the shorter gears with a deeper rear gear.

Don't know about the ap2 gears being stronger. The ap2 synchros are carbon though.

but then if it does break i would go with the ap2 tranny. the ap1 tranny has brass syncros which are (IMO) not as strong as the ap2 carbon syncrosIf you do something to blow an AP1 tranny, you would have blown an AP2 tranny as well.
The AP2 uses carbon coated synchros, not total carbon fiber ones.
I wouldn't replace a functional AP1 trans for a used AP2 on a turbo car just because. I'd wait until I broke the 1st one.
