Default Bad compression/leakdown on fresh inline pro engine? Please help!

Hello all,

I recently had my engine rebuilt by Inlinepro. I did a vanilla rebuild on my F22 (spec 0 as they call it) rebuilt it back to OEM specs. I've since put the engine back in the car, SOS supercharger back on, took it easy, no WOT runs, etc. Car was running perfect. I put about 200 miles on the engine and yesterday I decided to do a leakdown test to see how the engine was breaking in.

I have 15% leakdown on 1 and 4 and over 75% leakdown on 2 and 3. I also just did a compression test this morning: Cyl 1: 210, Cyl 2: 130, Cyl 3: 100, Cyl 4: 235

The spark plugs on cyl 2 and 3 were also covered in oil when I pulled them out.

Obviously these numbers are alarming me after just spending a ton of money on a rebuild.

I'm going to talk to Inline pro about it of course, but I wanted to get your opinions on what could have happened here. Are the rings not seated after 200 miles? Is this too early in the breakin process to be doing leakdown?

Looking forward to your response, I'm desperate for help at this point. I can't believe after all this time and money that I still don't have a well running engine.

Thanks in advance,
Dustin

@Dizings2k Starting 3 (or more?) threads on the same subject just results in duplicated and fragmented responses. Same questions were answered (I recall) by others yesterday or this morning.

Chuck, I’ve started two threads on it. I was hoping for maybe a different perspective from the FI community as it is a boosted car. Unfortunately my questions are far from answered.

Give them the benefit of the doubt and reach out to them first to see what they say. it is alarming at first glance, but you could be missing something, like what you said about everything possibly not being broken in enough to show consistent compression.

When you find out what it is please post it up - I'm curious.

Covered in oil is not good.

post some pics... Valve lash correct too for the bad leak down numbers?

Agreed, plugs should not be covered in oil prior to complete break in, something is amiss with this engine. Let Inline pro know your findings asap and report back.

I'm very happy to report that after talking with Inline Pro, I'm going to be towing the whole car there this friday. As per their suggestion, they are going to pull and disassemble the motor right in front of me so we can see what the cause is. Then we'll move forward. I'm anxious to find out.

Just to be clear, Inline Pro has been wonderful to work with from Day 1 of this build and continue to provide top notch customer service. I'll keep this thread updated as we progress.

Update from visit to inlinepro yesterday...

Inline Pro pulled off the head to reveal Cyl 2 and 3 scored badly. The pistons are lighter colors on the outside meaning they were heated up for some reason, but only on 2 and 3. Inline Pro is going to tear down the rest of the block, pull the pistons out and apparently the piston rings themselves will tell us whether this was ignition or fuel related.

Some of the theories we have so far are:

- Maybe bad injectors? I'm running ID1050X that I bought new and only have a few thousand miles on them as of now. Inline is going to flow test the injectors this coming week... but even they said they would be surprised to see 2 bad injectors.

- Possible bad coilpacks on those cylinders? If the coilpacks were going bad and firing at the wrong time, it could cause detonation BUT.. I would be getting CEL misfire codes like crazy, which I am not.. so this theory doesnt hold that much water either.

- Can a tune cause this? Inline Pro and myself agree that if it were the tune, all of the cylinders would be messed up?

Any ideas anyone??

here's the carnage:
