What are the miles on the car? Engine has ~12k miles

Are the coil towers dry or is there oil on the coils? Yes they are dry

What boost level does it run clean at VS break up? Runs clean until it hit 26-27 psi then starts break up at peak tq and a couple more times after

You've measured Voltage at the coil? Yes. 13.8-17.5 volts from 0-50 on the BAS knob

The ground on the back of the head is tight? Yes

What is your timing value that it breaks up? In KPro- Peak tq (6400-6700) is 8.5 deg, and 11 deg from 7200 to redline 8700k.

What fuel? E85, always fresh and tested. AF in boost is between 11.3-11.5

What is the plug gap? .019, new NGK BKR8EIX iridiums

You're checking it with a feeler gauge or one of those stupid discs? Using a feeler gauge yes

What are you using for coil dwell settings? Untuch from Kpro settings.

Have you tried different coils? Yes I tried my ap1 and old rsx coils

What ECM and how clean is your map signal? Map signal is clean and everything checks out good.

Thanks for take the time to ask these question.

Add timing. It's likely you don't have enough lead in it for the fuel/boost. Most cars I've done on that fuel/boost live just fine with 14 peak tq and 19 at redline. Now.... I'm not saying stuff 5 degrees in it all at once. I'm suggesting you may not have enough timing for it to run clean. For arguments sake, what timing is in it where it does run clean?

Thanks

Jay Meagher
At 26 psi, 10 deg peak, 13 deg to redline. Kpro is different from aem values so its hard to compare. The power is there for sure for the given boost so I didn't blame timing for the spark blowout. I can try doing timing to see what happens. I had the read the plugs because of the inconsistent runs.

Finally fixed the issue! It was simple. I switched to a heat range 9 Iridium and bam clean runs back to back! Hell, I made 500hp @ only 13 psi. I kept the same plug gap of .019 and didn't touch the timing.

Realstreet, I added timing up top and didnt gain anything. On one of the pulls I shut off the car at the end of the run and checked the plug. It's center on the bend of the strap. I tried added timing and the car lost power. It made the most power at 12.5 degrees up top. Yeah it sounds low but that's what it wanted man. AF are 11.7 flat.

By the way, I called NGK today and had a long conversation about all these plugs people are running to fix issues. There were some big disagreements from them for sure. He did say that at my CR of 11:1 and 700hp, heat range 8, without a doubt, is too hot and need 9s. He said what I experienced may not have even been spark blowout and could have been pre-ignition. I don't know what is was but I know that these 9s made the car feel much smoother and finally gave me clean runs at 30 psi I couldn't get traction though haha.

Very interesting thread, curious if I should step to 9's instead. Will swapping a plug affect the tune ?

No it won't man. All of my AF stayed the same and timing was the same. Running a colder plug just ensures it doesn't get too hot and pre-ignites. I'm curious if I had spark blowout or pre-det! The BAS didn't do anything with the 8s soo, maybe it was.

Interesting......I wonder if I should try out the iridium 9's then even though I wasn't having issues. May just be safer all around at these power levels. You're on the cool burning fuel too, e85 right?

What's the official number of the NGK iridium 9's btw? So I make sure I get the correct one.

I was going to say, you should check your logs and see if there was any knocking. I ditched the 8's and went with 9s after blowing my head gasket on the dyno........

When I spoke to the guy at NGK, there was no doubt whatsoever that 8s were too hot for my power level and 11:1 CR. I never even thought about pre-ignition until now because so many S2000s have had good luck with 8s. But how many have used 8s at 700+ hp stock compression? Probably not too many.

Spoolin, yes I'm on E85 and the Iridium 9s are stock number 2669. Napa carries them for $7 a piece.
