Default Are BOVs necessary on Greddy turbos?

Hey guys,

I always heard that if you turbo charge a car you need a BOV to keep from having compressor surge. But, from what some people have said, the stock Greddy turbo kit with just a high flow CAT and standard AP2 basemap may not even need a BOV. Is that right? I plan on getting an AEM tru boost and UEGO later on and upping the boost,, but staying with the stock boost for now. Am I good for now with no BOV than adding one when I up the boost later? Thanks guys!

Rich

If you do not use a Bov you will get back pressure which In time will mess up your turbo.(Note: not much time is needed to mess It up)

Sorry to say but thats simply not true at all.

Your talking about a turbine that is spinning at 100k rpms, there is no way a measly 7psi is going to even attempt to slow that sucker down.

We are talking about LONG term damage, and even then I bet the seals give out WAY before the turbo dies from no bov.

I kind of thought the same thing Spec Ops. I would think that Greddy would include a BOV in the kit if it was necessary to keep the turbo safe. I realize they design these kits to be unmodified, so the stock 7-8 psi is probably safe with now BOV, but I would like to here everyones opinion on this. When I had my Eclipse GS-T, it had a BOV on it stock, but I think it was running between 11-12 psi from the manufacturer, than I uped it to 16 !

Man, cars that come turbo as OEM are so much easier to deal with, but I guess if this was easy everyone would do it!

like spec ops said, if you are keeping it relatively mild (7 psi) you don't NEED the BOV; did I get it? Yes, because a BOV is only $200 or so and I like the sound. Would I get a BOV again? Probably not; I would actually get a diverter valve.

It also keeps the turbo spooled higher between shifts.

Are you running the type rs DEV? They sell a replacement horn for attaching a hose to convert it.

I've seen some stuff on that synapse BOV. Is it expensive?

Also, what is a Diverter valve? I have never heard of that. I had a Greddy Type S on my eclipse and loved it, but have heard a lot about the Synapses. I just don't want anything real loud. Just a small whoosh of air.
