Default Are Cams worth it for torque increase ?

We all know the F20/F22 can make tons of horsepower with ease on boost but torque lags by a lot. Can one make a significant amount of more torque with just a cam upgrade (tuned with AEM or Haltech)? Generally speaking , which ones tend to make the most amount of torque (Skunk2,BC,etc) with a stock bottom end? Dyno pics are always welcomed.

Many people have tried many different brands of cams but they always go back to the oem stock cams. I'm making over 600whp and everyone here pretty much run stock cams.

Cams are not worth it unless you start getting near the 1000hp mark. At that point, the ferrea setup is hard to beat.

I've seen this thread here with dyno sheets saying they make a difference even at lower power levels.

You can't get horsepower without torque.

Torque is a measurement. Horsepower is an arbitrary mathematical formula based on that measurement and engine revolutions per minute. Torque at higher rpm will indicate more horsepower. Torque in engines is usually pretty constant and on a graph will show a nearly horizontal line. The horsepower curve climbs with rpm. Remember, it's arbitrary formula.

The formula is no more complicated than junior high school math. Torque (in lb-ft) x engine rpm/5252 = horsepower. Easy to see that at 5252 rpm torque and horsepower are the same. Big road truck diesels have very low horsepower but pull massive trailers because they have so much torque. Their horsepower numbers look low because they don't rev very high.

High horsepower numbers are the result of the ability of the engine to produce torque at high rpms. But it all starts with torque.

For the S2000 engine if we assume the torque output is constant we get a chart like this. Rpm has a limit. The only way to get more HP is to increase torque.

Torque rpm HP
150 2000 57
150 3000 86
150 4000 114
150 5000 143
150 5252 150
150 6000 171
150 7000 200
150 8000 228
150 9000 257

Or increase the rev limit, which is what aftermarket cams can help you do.

Think just a cam will reliably spin the engine to (say) 11,000 rpm and 314 HP? Something tells me we'd see cam kits from all the major vendors if this was all it took.

Just some food for thought, URGE testing new FI cams , looks like they went back to the drawing board and I've yet to see any news lately. Also, Official camshaft thread obviously this is more geared for the NA guys but the info is still good.

All depends on what the car is for...a good cam setup that will increase the power band over oem will not be fun to drive in an every day car, which is what 99%of what this forum is geared towards...hence the limited threads of actual fulL out builds with custom fabrication. But I will tell you there are cams out there that will increase the power band specifically up top with sacrifices down low...

been there done that cams don't do anything for a car on the street. i tested the urge cams 1st set and while i had a nice lopey idle and more timing threshold we couldn't get back the power we lost. i will say this had we had toda cam gears and the rpm they would have made more over 9k rpm and small bump in the off vetc range but the thing would have drank fuel like a sailor. here's the thing our stock cam on vetc is around 300 degrees of duration think prostock dragster anymore duration and you dilute the intake mix and blow raw fuel out the ex pipe so without going into specs i lost but hey that's how we get new parts we try new things and learn what we can
